How to get to Greenwich Station - coming from north by car.

I will be coming into London tomorrow to watch the marathon.
I need to be at Greenwich Station at 7.30am (FFS!). I am coming south on the M11.
I often park at Redbridge and get the tube into London.
Does this sound like the best option? I'm never sure whether getting on the Tube asap is preferable to driving in as far as possible before parking up. It won't be busy at 6.30am so I think driving further in would be possible.

I don't want to leave home at 5.30am!

Which part of Greenwich do you need to be at
Will the train strikes affect you.

HammerMyhome · 01/10/2022 20:39

I’d go further down the South circular to somewhere around blackheath/ Lewisham. Not long at all from Redbridge but much closer in public transport

Devo1818 · 01/10/2022 20:57

Park in Greenwich? Cutty Sark car park?

Devo1818 · 01/10/2022 20:57

Or Lewisham and DLR

ReviewingTheSituation · 01/10/2022 21:06

ALL the advice is not to drive to the marathon. Why do you need to be at Greenwich at 7.30? Start isn't until 9.30. Are you dropping someone off?

Trains and tubes are working tomorrow (in the London area and surrounds), so I'd use those. If you're transporting a runner, I can't believe they've left it until now to think about logistics!

On Marathon Day?

You're having a laugh.

It's impossible to drive anywhere round Greenwich itself that day, and there really won't be anywhere to park

I'd stick with Redbridge tbh, as it's familiar and it shouldn't be affected by displaced traffic from all the road closures. And It's easy (Central Line to Stratford, change to DLR for Greenwich). Bear in mind that services will be busy, even that early, as there are literally tens of thousands of people making that journey

Have a wonderful day - it's an amazing event!

Or Lewisham and DLR

Agree that this is likely to be easier. It is only a couple of stops on the dlr

Well I'm not driving to the marathon!
We want to get to the front of the barrier well before the wheelchair and elite race starts.

Thanks. Even if I'm not at all familiar with driving in London?

I haven’t checked if the roads are open, but the best way would be to come off the M11 onto the A12, come off (A13 exit I think) and park on the Isle of Dogs. You can then go through the Greenwich foot tunnel.

TheOrigRights · 01/10/2022 22:01

I've spectated a few times before (and run it once) but always got our running club bus up which has dumped us in Greenwich Park and then we've walked through. It's a long old day, but so worth it to get at the front of the barrier so you can lean on it.
There's a crowd of us meeting up so we can do shuttle runs to the nearby Costa and Waitrose Grin
After mile 7, we'll get on a boat to Embankment, and have a rest, and see them come through at mile 22.

I think I will actually get off at Cutty Sark.

Isle of Dogs has quite a few road closures, but according to the leaflet I linked they don't start until 0800 (others are earlier). No idea where you'd park - isn't parking suspended on the route, so those cars will displace to surrounding roads

If you're confident of driving to Lewisham then go for that.

But Redbridge would work, as the change to DLR is at a terminus, so even if busy you'll be able to get on and might get a seat (there are extra services running)

notdaddycool · 01/10/2022 22:29

I’d not try to take a car anywhere near Greenwich or the Isle of Dogs. DLR to Greenwich or Cutty Sark is the best option. You can get it from Stratford and can privately park there, but I’d guess Redbridge is a better call.

On the Isle of Dogsost roads around the route have suspended parking which means residents will have to be parked on any space not suspended-it’s unlikely you would even find a space. It’s a nightmare for us TBH.

parking at Stratford Westfield or Redbridge is probably the easiest as you can take the DLR to Greenwich easily from Stratford station

eurochick · 02/10/2022 03:44

Stick to Redbridge. I've lived on the Isle of Dogs and in Lewisham. Both have road closures and are usually gridlocked on marathon day.

FatMog · 02/10/2022 04:09

Check if you have to pay the ULEZ where you plan to park on the TfL website you might not need to though if if your car is fairly new.

Remember most public transport doesn't get going until 7-7.30am on a Sunday so even if you park along the DLR or train line you might still get stuck.

TfL is showing first Sunday service on Central Line from Redbridge, at 03:20, normally running every 20 mins

Their website isn't showing the full timetable for DLR, just that services are running well (this is the line with extra services today)

ULEZ is anything inside north and south circular - Lewisham is, Redbridge straddles. But if OP's car is reasonably new, then it won't apply.

Hope you're well underway, @TheOrigRights and that you have a great day

TheOrigRights · 02/10/2022 06:45

I'm in Redbridge, next train in 13 mins.
Thanks for Ulez reminder, my car is NOT new!
Need a wee.

Hope yoy brought a power bank, so your phone keeps going!

The Beeb coverage has started, but I think I'll wait until later before watching any

TheOrigRights · 02/10/2022 08:46

I DID bring my powerbank!

I'm back to report a very successful day all round.
My niece finished in 3hr 3mins.
Our viewing positions were perfect, the weather was far better than forecast, all young members of our party were well behaved.
The boat trip was a welcome break.

I had a lovely chat with a finisher on my way back to Redbridge.

And my teen DS who stayed home alone was fine.

I am tired now!

Oh well done that niece!

Glad you had such a good day
