We’re going to Bluestone in October half term and whilst the DC’s (16 & 11) would happily spend the whole time in the pool, I want to escape a couple of times. I’m looking for recommendations for pretty coastlines / countryside for east walks and nice towns & villages to explore (ideally with good pubs/restaurants).

Tenby of course! I'd also go to Folly Farm. You are never too old for Folly Farm. I don't know if the boat to Caldey Island runs in October but if it does that's worth a trip.

Sodie · 22/09/2022 20:02

I've lived here my whole life (hate the place haha and plan to move to Somerset next year). But St Davids is lovely and the cathedral, we are atheist but it's such a calm place. Narberth is worth a visit, also Saundersfoot and Tenby. Folly farm is a must. We always have a season pass my. Also Bosherston lily ponds, so many sightings of otters and terrapins lately. Check out the facebook page pembrokeshire I love it (I did not set up this page).

Quveas · 22/09/2022 20:05

Henllys iron age village. The breakfast is to die for!

Solva.
And I agree with St David's.

TattiePants · 22/09/2022 20:11

Thank you, some brilliant suggestions and I’m off to investigate properly. St David’s looks gorgeous and I’ve actually been to Tenby years ago so should have remembered that.

The walk at Bosherston Lily Ponds is beautiful. It takes you right down onto the sandy beach at Broad Haven.
There’s a nice looped walk around the tidal millpond at Carew Castle, which is really close to Bluestone.
Freshwater West is a good place to watch surfers and the beach was in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part one and two (backdrop to Shell Cottage).
Colby Woodland Garden is perfect for picnics and walks. We’ve managed to find rope swings and stepping stones in previous years.

Arnaquer · 22/09/2022 20:19

Tenby
Narberth
Oakwood - has some good roller coasters
Saundersfoot or Coppet Hall beach for paddle boarding
St David's
Abereidy for cliff jumping or coastearing ( although probably wrong time of year)

PenguinLove1 · 22/09/2022 20:21

I love Oakwood!

Folly Farm is the best day out ive ever had with my family, its a zoo, farm, soft play, indoor fairground and excellent adventure playground in one
We also liked manor park, and dino world i think it was called

TattiePants · 22/09/2022 20:26

The Lily ponds are added to the list, they look gorgeous. I’d forgotten about paddle boarding. We have our own so we might take that along (and the wetsuits!).

OP posts:
Arnaquer · 22/09/2022 20:30

Definitely take wetsuit. I went out in my board yesterday and although the sea isn't too cold the air was a a bit chilly

Arnaquer · 22/09/2022 20:33

Heatherton might also be good for older children. I think they do high ropes and go karts

EntertainingandFactual · 22/09/2022 20:40

Barafundle Bay
Manobier Castle
Caldey Island (on the boat)
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

helenabonhamfarter · 22/09/2022 20:40

Coasteering
Kayak king
Crabbing and crab sandwiches off Fishguard harbour
Fish and chips in Porthgain harbour at Tej Shed Bistro
Paddle boarding from Whitesands
Best beach by a country mile IMO is Barrafundle

dicdicnurse · 22/09/2022 20:42

If you're looking for a rainy day activity I recommend the escape rooms at heatherton. There are 3 to choose from and good sun for all ages. We loved it!

Chocolateycheesecake · 22/09/2022 20:56

Walk around Marloes peninsula (right time of year to spot baby seals!), then visit Marloes Sands which is one of my favourite places in the world - vast expanses of sand peppered with dramatic jagged rocks (check tides as it’s completed covered at high tide). And a fab little cafe selling wonderful cakes on the walk between the car park and the beach. Truly one of my all time happy places.

I adore Pembrokeshire and we always go either Easter or October, I love an off-season beach trip.

Swimbler · 22/09/2022 20:59

What about a day out at www.wildlakeswales.com if the kids would enjoy climbing or wake boarding (with wetsuits!!)

Clingfilm · 22/09/2022 21:02

Oakwood Park and Heatherton would suit teens.
Folly Farm is lovely but I wouldn't say a it's a day out for teens.
Tenby for all the family.

Chocolateycheesecake · 22/09/2022 21:05

Also second the recommendations for the Lilyponds/Broad Haven beach, Barrafundle Bay and Freshwater West (stop at Cafe Mor - takeaway built from an old lifeboat in the car park selling crab rolls, burgers etc, all delicious).

TimeToGoUpAGear · 22/09/2022 21:32

Heatherton is good. We went to Saundersfoot in the summer and went twice for go karts and mini golf.

TattiePants · 22/09/2022 21:41

There’s so many things I want to do now that we might have to come back for another holiday next year! Or I could just leave the DCs to fend for themselves in bluestone while I have days out….

Cafe Mor has moved a few miles to Angle, it’s in the Old Point House and it’s worth the trip!

CaveMum · 22/09/2022 21:50

A visit to Barafundle Bay - there’s a lovely 6 mile coastal walk from the beach that takes you to the Lily Ponds and back again, though we did it in August slot might be a tad breezy in October! It’s an easy walk though, our DC were 7 and 4 when we did it and they managed it fine.

CaveMum · 22/09/2022 21:54

We also did a day trip to the reservoir at Llys-y-Fran which has lots of outdoor activities, or just a good spot for a walk/cycle.

PicpoulDeMeNay · 22/09/2022 22:02

Pembrokeshire is my happy place and I’m planning to move there in my 3-5 year plan!

Definitely recommend:
Barafundle (my favourite beach in the world)
Bosherston Lily Ponds
Green Bridge of Wales
Tenby
St Davids
Solva
Llys y Fran

In October you may still just about see baby seals - best place to see them is Deer Park near Marloes and the Green Bridge.

MissBattleaxe · 22/09/2022 22:12

Tenby has some amazing restaurants. The market has a Malaysian takeaway called Nora's that makes fantastic curries to order. It's a beautiful town for a stroll with lots of little indie shops and lots of curiosities such as old shop signs and stained glass and mosaic floors where the dept store used to be.
