does anyone know of a nice place to have a chilled out holiday within about 2 hours drive of edinburgh??? we are flying up to edinburgh to see friends and then have a week - don't want to drive too far with the lo.
ideally in the hills/near water, beautiful scenery
any ideas?

St Andrews would be my choice!

Sunshinemummy · 24/01/2008 13:32

St Andrews is absolutely gorgeous. Also there are some nice places on the Fife Coast further down such as Anstruther. I would also suggest somewhere in the Trossachs National Park. You can get to Loch Lomond in about 1.5 hours.

Loch Lomond area?
Fife/St Andrews
South of Scotland/East of Dumfries and Galloway
What's budget?

Elie on Fife Coast - great beach and family friendly pubs - close to St Andrews for day trips!

This is a favourite of ours

lodge on the Loch

Elie is lovely and The Ship Inn is a really nice place to stay.

bigspender30 · 24/01/2008 15:15

I would either head for Perthshire-Pitlochry/Dunkeld area is beautiful or Angus glens are stunning -Glen Clova, Glen Isla or Glen Prosen. You are then close to beach at Montrose and St Cyrus which is deserted most days.

louii · 24/01/2008 15:17

The likes of Anstruther and Elie are pretty bleak in the winter though if you are coming soon.

SaltireOShanter · 24/01/2008 15:19

All Most of scotland is nice!
St Andrews is nice, but in the winter it's full of students and in the summer it's full of tourists (usually Americans wearing tartan golfing trousers)
Dumfriesshire is the best bit of all
What bigspender said about Glen Clova is correct, it's lovely

Loch Tay area is lovely. Around Loch Tay you have Ben Lawers - good for walking, Glen Lyon which is beautiful and loads of other interesting places. Well worth a visit.

Twinklemegan · 26/01/2008 23:05

BTW, I'd say Aviemore is about 3 hours north of Edinburgh (although it does depend which side of the Firth you start from).

luvaduck · 28/01/2008 12:21

thanks twinklemegan
