If I disappear it's because DD3 is a milk monster and doesn't leave me alone, but till she calls -

I'm going to be doing a lot of holidaying int he UK for a while and nice places get booked early man! I bloody hate planning ahead so far but other massively organised buggers are forcing me to plan ahead.

Sooooo - I've booked a week in Bude, Cornwall (we live in London btw), but where else might I like?

Background info - have car, can travel.
3 girls, eldest is 6 but has Down's syndrome so at the development stage of a 2/3 year old really, and her sister's are currently 2yrs and 4 months.

We stayed here in Pembrokeshire last year, it was gorgeous and the location was perfect.www.littleloveston.co.uk

FrayedKnot · 23/01/2008 21:42

North Devon - the beaches around Woolacombe, Croyde etc are lovely and you are also in striking distance of Exmoor, there is cycling on the Tarka Trail, and it's fairly undeveloped in comparison to certain parts of Cornwall, for e.g.

Another vote also for Pembrokeshire - St Brides bay is lovely (we stayed in Little Haven several years ago) and I always imagine it's as Cornwall probably was about 50 years ago - not much to do except enjoy the fantastic beaches, walking etc, and not too many people, even in August.

sunflowervalley · 23/01/2008 21:59

Another vote for the North Norfolk coast, but then I'm biased as I live there.

Holkham is fab as is Blakney point,Wells next the sea,Brancaster beach,Holme next the sea.
Holkham beach has been used in many a film .

Also as someone mentioned Holt is quiant.

If you like National trust then we have some of the best imo,
Blickling hall
Felbrigg hall
Sheringham park
Holkham hall

Great seafood, the famous cromer crabs and gorgeous samphire.

sealife centre, wildlife parks for the kids.

Stephen Fry lives here and rates it and knows what he's talking about it.

moondog · 23/01/2008 22:06

Tan y Castell

Thomcat, this cottage belongs to very dear frinds of mine. They have just slaved over it all summer and it is beautiful as well as being divinely situated.

They are very cool people, she is an actress and he is a language consultant and they have a delightful 6 year old son.I'm fussy as hell and would stay ther like a shot.

luvaduck · 23/01/2008 22:08

this is a great thread
holidays abroad feel like too much hassle with a wee one - we can only just about get what we need in a car let alone on a flight.

can i ask about places in scotland? there appear to be a lot of scots on here. where would you recommend thats beautiful in the hills/near water - sea or lake within about 2 hours or edinburgh.

sorry if this is thread hijack - please tell me if you want me to start a new one

moondog · 23/01/2008 22:09

That is in North Wales by the way.

andiemustlosehalfastonemore · 23/01/2008 22:12

devon around dartmouth I just love it we are going for two weeks in the summer staying in dittisham loads to do blackpool sands steam train to paignton ferry to dartmouth

discoverlife · 23/01/2008 22:17

North Wales around Snowdonia and Caernarfon.
Lovely lakes to swim in, cosy pubs, beautiful vista's and some fantastic touristy things to do.

If your on a budget (or want something really nice) and doing a holiday house exchange doesn't turn you off.
www.homebase-hols.com/ for some great idea's.

moondog · 23/01/2008 23:07

I would agree Discover. That's my part of the world.
Thomcat, did a home exchange with another MNer (Countess Dracula) last Novemeber (London/Wales) and it was brilliant.

DrippingLizzie · 23/01/2008 23:18

The best UK holidays I've had have been in Northumberland. Totally unspoilt, very few tourists and the most beautiful beaches and castles in the country. We stay in Newton-by-the-Sea...an idyllic retreat for those of us desperate to escape the rat-race. Visit Alnwick Castle (where Harry Potter was filmed), Bamburgh Castle (best of its kind in the UK, IMO) and the fishing village of Craster (home of the kipper)! Best beaches are at Bamburgh and Beadnell Bay

Anywhere in Cornwall, North or south...its all beautiful!

SlightlyMadShrek · 23/01/2008 23:26

Hastings was fab for younger families.

Quiet, liltle town with lots for younger children to do - the fair is perfectly suited for under 8-10's, DTDs coudl go on everything alone a couple of years ago at 5, and it was reasonabley priced (not £2 per person).

Lovely village lots of history - but surprisingly little 1066 stuff.
Aquarium.
Lots of free boating/fishing/lifeboat museums which were great for a days entertainment.
A couple of funnicular railways
Various castles locally
I htink Winnie the Poohs wood 100 acre wood is within reach but we didn't go.
Drusillas about 20-30mins drive waway was fab, a little expesnive but worth it. Use Tesco tokens if you can

They have a fab Hastings festival fortnight (August I think) and the atmosphere and extra activities amke the place come alive.

SlightlyMadShrek · 23/01/2008 23:27

Oh but beach a bit pebbly, bit better at Eastborne I think - 10-15 min drive.

roisin · 23/01/2008 23:33

Isle of Mull - fantastic countryside, wildlife, and sealife.

In 2 weeks spent there we've seen sea eagles, golden eagles, otters, grey seals, common seals, harbour porpoise, common dolphin, minke whale, roe deer, fallow deer, etc. etc.

Fantastic self-catering quality accommodation at Glengorm Castle

luvaduck · 23/01/2008 23:50

thanks for that

DrippingLizzie · 24/01/2008 00:04

DontCallMeHun, I'm not sure whether I want to divulge for fear of our haven being discovered, but hell, it's Link House Farm. Fab accommodation (esp. for kids), the most wonderful views over the sand dunes of Beadnell Bay and sunsets to die for...

Another vote for Pembrokeshire and in particular Tenby. Its gorgeous and you won't be disappointed. Fab beaches and loads to do. Google Tenby and also Barafundle beach nearby. We have had some lovely times there

WideWebWitch · 03/02/2008 08:19

Hi Thomcat, I like these

Blandmum · 03/02/2008 08:44

We had a fantastic week at whisun last year near Lyme Regis. It rained for much of the time, but there was a lot to do in the area, and we had a fantastic time.

We were helped by the fact that the place we stayed had a shared (small) pool and jaccussi. At the end of the day, I'd take the kids for a splash around

here

Cottage wasn't massive, but was very well equipped, There was a games compendium for the kids, and a video library, First rate place to go.

iloverosycheeks · 04/02/2008 11:38

Luvaduck - the trossachs is beautiful area of scotland - not too far from civilization but scenery amazing plus loads to do..

luvaduck · 04/02/2008 17:58
