Destination ideas

I’m totally stuck for ideas on where to go. Looking for somewhere maybe up to 3 hours from london (possibly slightly more) for a family with a very over energetic 3 year old and a 12 year old who can be quite uninterested in everything and doesn’t like crowds/loud noises/lots of people. Looking for next Easter.

I’d prefer somewhere more rural and not bothered about visiting towns/eating out. Like to be outdoors and gentle walks. Happy not to see many other people. Activities for the children (ideally outdoors things). I feel like we’ve been everywhere within a 2-3 hour radius and totally stuck for a good place. Last year, we went to the Peak District and did lots of activities, like rock climbing, which went down really well so would be up for something similar but don’t want it to be anywhere busy and im
aware the weather could be really variable. Isle of Wight is already booked for later on next year.

any snippets of advice or suggestions for destinations or self catering very much welcomed.

We had a lovely stay in the Norfolk Broads. There’s lots to do with kids - Wroxham Miniature World, Bewilderwood, steam railway, Wroxham Barns, bike hire at Broadlands, kayaking, SUPs and boat tours.

Thank you so much. I'd so love to go to Liverpool and do a Beatles tour (have been wanting to for 25 years!) but we're looking for more of a rural escape than a city break.

@Funf we've had some great holidays in Norfolk but we've pretty much done the area to death now (you're right, it's a great call!).

Yorkshire Dales? Stay somewhere like Skipton/ Grassington/ Settle - then you’ve got Malham Cove, Bolton Abbey, Embsay Railway, walk up to Ribbleshead Viaduct, do to Hawes, lots of walking and easy to get away from the crowds

@DCIJackieDeering that sounds and looks perfect - just what we’d like. I guess my hesitance is I was thinking it would be better to stay down south at Easter as the weather could be so variable that time of year and it’s more likely to be milder in the south.

Northumberland may be a bit further than you are looking for but it’s worth the drive. Castles, beaches, easy bike trails, boats to see seals, more castles….it’s v beautiful. And less wet than the west side of the country.

How about Exmoor? We love it there and you can head out to the coast for a day too.

Reastie · 15/09/2022 15:56

@BarrelOfOtters id love to go there but the drive is just too much for us. Maybe when Ds is a bit older in a few years.

@Sprig1 I’m going to look into Exmoor - thank you.

To be honest Yorkshire can have a great or awful weather regardless of the time of year, Easter can be in lovely in T-shirts, or there can be snow/ rain/ gales. But to be honest, apart from the fact there’s less chance of snow, the same can be true in August
