dh and I have decided to spend Easter in Harrogate (never been there before). Does anyone have any recommendations for hotels/b&bs? Thanks!

there are loads - price range? Specifications?

iamdingdong · 22/01/2008 18:26

hotel du vin v nice, good food, go for superior room though, makes a big difference

Lukesmammy · 22/01/2008 20:56

If you really want to push the boat out and money is no object and you have a car to get around then I would suggest Rudding Park - v expensive but v nice.

There are loads of B&B's in and around the town centre but they are quite expensive in comparison to other B&B's elsewhere.

Harrogate is a conference town and they get booked up very quickly and have a 'captive audience' if you like and therefore can charge a lot!

There is a lovely country pub called the Pine Marten near the Royal Horticultural Society Gardens called the Pine Marten. It does rooms and from what I have seen they are v nice and reasonably priced at about £70 per night including breakfast. They do family rooms too. Great food and a fab outside area to sit and have a glass of vino. It is actually part of a hotel chain (can't think of the name) but don't let that put you off - even chain hotels in Harrogate are very very nice!

Oh and there is a Betty's tea room near by - v famous and a 'must visit' when in Harrogate!

I have moved from Harrogate to London recently (regretfully as I loved living in Harrogate). Your post has made me feel all nostalgic - enjoy your trip!

MrsRecycle · 23/01/2008 10:14

Oh hi Lukesmummy - I live in London! Thanks for the recommendation - will check it out. Not sure we'll be able to sit outside in March, but you never know.

We chose Harrogate as dh likes Bath and it's a Spa town so we are hoping its similar.

Fullmoon (love your name!) I guess we don't want to go too expensive, somewhere that's central so we can walk around town.

Dingdong - will check out the Hotel du vin (how can you forget a hotel with a wonderful name like that!).

Thanks again ladies.

An eclectic mix for your delectation...

bit twee but apparently friendly

Hotel Du Vin expensive chain, sadly never been rich enough to even have a drink there! But well-regarded

best western blah blah

old swan, steeped in history. Had crap christmas party there once

looks very nice, have eaten in restaurant and it was fab

really central, lovely little spa

Mind you the Turkish Baths is 2 mins walk from St George and is worth a visit (take your cossies if you're shy)

I'd stick to B and B as there are so many lovely places to eat out in Harrogate.

MrsRecycle · 24/01/2008 09:52

Thank you so much fullmoon - I'll check them out. You are a star!

I live in Harrogate and find Hotel du vin very overpriced and pretentious. When I have had lunch there it has been mediocre and £100 for 2.

Balmoral is very nice.

Old Swan is in need of a face lift.

The Bell is the best pub in town and does reasonable bar meals (NO KIDS ALLOWED)

Orchid restaurant is excellent but book early - you can do it online.

Friendly service at Loch Fyne.

I agree with fullmoonfiend. go with B&B and eat out.

Further afield there is fountains abbey, Harlow Carr.

Hope that helps. Sometimes there is a conference over easter so check before you book as you won't find a restaurant table or space in a bar

fullmoonfiend · 25/01/2008 19:28

Hurrah! Thanks for telling me that Mike, I'm so relieved to hear I'm not missing out by not being able to afford to go IFKWIM

Eliza2 · 25/01/2008 19:31

Fullmoonfiend, is there still that rambling antiques/junk furniture shop kind of diagonally across the road from Betty's down an alley (I think)?

As I look around this house I see quite a few bits and pieces from there.

I still miss my Saturday morning shops in Harrogate.

fullmoonfiend · 25/01/2008 19:33

sadly not, it is now a poncey furniture and accessories shop (lots of shiny chrome etc. Everything is silver and black)

I must admit, I loved seeing my town's name in print

Eliza2 · 25/01/2008 20:39

Oh no!

Harrogate is gorgeous. My husband I did lots of our courtship there. Now we have children I realise how spoiled we were, spending lazy mornings browsing and reading the papers over coffee.

I'm going to stop now. Before I get too nostalgic.

fullmoonfiend · 26/01/2008 11:21

well some us are envious of your part of the world, Eliza...

IKWYM though. Before Children, We used to spend Sunday mornings in the Blues Bar with a pile of papers and a very fine brunch before staggering home to bed...
Or spend the morning in bed, before meeting friends for a long boozy sunday lunch...Gah! Must stop tormenting myself.

MrsRecycle · 28/01/2008 13:02

Am so looking forward to it now - have booked Grants Hotel - all the others were booked. Thanks again.
