Things to do in/around Chester

We're visiting the area at half term, camping.
I'd love to hear recommendations of teen and dog friendly things to do in the area.
Sights, day-hikes, activities.
Also recommendations of local dog kennels - we sometimes use a local place for a day rather than leaving the dogs in our usual kennels for the whole time.
Thank you!

Warren Wood kennels and cattery has a very good reputation - I use the cattery.

With teens and a dog, I'd recommend Delamere Forest (can hire bikes) and also water sports at Delamere Wild Shore or Manley Mere, although it's possibly a bit cold in October.

Chester Cathedral is nice and the area around Northgate Street has many local eating places. Also check out what's on at the Storyhouse, there will be film, theatre and other stuff on.

You can walk the length of the Roman walls (around 2 miles) and visit the racecourse. And visit the Groves down by the river.

If the dog is in kennels then Chester zoo is a good day out.

What age teen? Big difference between say 13 and 19.

Sick to death is a quirky medical museum
and very worth a look.

Escapism - problem solving escspe rooms.

Crocky trail (20
min drive) is amazing for kids and younger teens - adults too tbh!

Loads of nice walks for family and dog - the river, racecourse, Grosvenor
park or further afield (30 mins) beeston castle, Delamere forest (also has go ape which is great for teens) and the sandstone trail.

Boat trip / pedalos on the river Dee.

All the Roman things - amphitheatre, Dewa, Roman gardens
Just into wales and you have the coast and many beautiful hiking spots like Moel
Famau.

If you're National Trust members, Erddig and Chirk Castle are just over the border in Wales, also Dunham Massey near Altrincham.

The Wirral has a nice coastline, you can take the dog to the beach at Thurstaston, Hoylake, West Kirby, Wirral Country Park is lovely.

If raining, there is trampolining, bowling, cinema, mini golf and shopping at Cheshire Oaks.

Llangollen and a boat trip. Train to Ruabon then a bus.

Ooh yes, a visit to the Pontycysyllte Aqueduct on the way to Llangollen would be fab! There is an easy walk from Llangollen to the ruins of the Dinas Bran castle.

Oh wow, these are amazing thank you all!

Teens are 13, 15 and we're visiting the 18 year old. They're pretty good and go with the flow of whatever is planned - in some ways that makes the planning harder than specific requests!

Mine want to go back to Chester just to go to the American smokehouse on the river front.

MeredithGreen · 30/08/2022 21:45

Chester is great, walk the walls, along the river, up through the park with a few monkey nuts to feed the squirrels. Grovesnor museum is interesting, lots of local history as well as natural history etc.
Wepre park is great for walking, there are castle ruins to explore if you walk the full length of the park from the free car park.
Then if your looking to have a paid day out, Chester zoo, croaky trail, manley mere, Beeston castle etc

Hickory's.
You can now order home delivery and cook it at home.

As everyone has said. There are so many great things to do in and around Chester.

Walk the walls
Visit Sick to Death
The Groves
The park
Eating outside
Visit the market and its food stalls (lots of craft beer and wine)
Storyhouse theatre is great

Further afield
Delamere Forest
Beeston Castle
Chester Zoo (you have to go!)
Shopping at Cheshire Oaks
Trip to Llangollen, Liverpool or Manchester

It's a great city, is your 18 yo at the university?

Sortingfinances2 · 30/08/2022 23:09

@Pieceofpurplesky thank you. He's working up there so we're visiting at half term.

My dc prefer Manley mere to the crocky trail but they're both great.
Agree with all the other suggestions. If you venture to delamere they also have ebikes for hire.

mdh2020 · 31/08/2022 08:06

We stayed outside Chester and went to the North Wales coast. We also caught a ferry across the Mersey into Liverpool.

Zhx3 · 31/08/2022 09:53

I do love a day in Liverpool, especially with older teens. You can catch a direct (but slow) train, running every 15 minutes from Chester - takes around 45 minuted to get to Liverpool.
