Newquay v st Ives!?

Hi

I am looking at going to cornwall in either May/June or early July next year with my 4 year old son, 1 year old daughter and my mum and grandma. We're getting the train over so won't have a car. My grandma can't walk very far and we may use a wheelchair, I will also have a pram.

I can't decide between st Ives or Newquay? I love the look of st Ives but I've considered staying in Newquay and perhaps going over to st Ives for a day, but not sure how? I'm also interested in going to lands end. Realistically though we just want to explore some of cornwalls history, whilst keeping the kids entertained. Somewhere that ideally has good transport links or things close by?

I can walk for miles but I know my grandma will struggle. I'm not sure where suits us most?
I've heard Newquay is beautiful but full of stags and hens. My son is autistic and quite sensitive to crowded noisy places so I don't know if that makes a difference either.

Thank you in advance x

Newquay has more to do, but if you want to see St Ives and Land’s End, I’d stay in St Ives. It’s really tricky to travel between St Ives and Newquay by public transport, and it’s a lot easier to travel to Land’s End from St Ives. www.firstbus.co.uk/adventures-bus/services/lands-end-coaster

Newquay is your typical

Thanks to the cat I posted too soon! Newquay is your typical seaside place, tacky shops with buckets and spades, lots of stag and hens, it's not the nicest of places to be honest.

St Ives has cobbled streets but is really pretty, great beaches but gets very busy.

Personally I would avoid both places and choose somewhere like the Helford River/Greek, Falmouth etc.

I feel St.Ives is better for what you want.
Book any restaurants well in advance.
We stayed about one stop away on the train in Carbis bay in a small B&B it was great as a short work to a nice beach with loos and a Cafe, or train in to St.Ives

Both are not on direct train lines so it will mean connecting trains from main line.

as a local, my POV is that they are both lovely but both very busy. St Ives streets are much narrower and feel more crowded whereas a lot more space in Newquay, but still busy.

Newquay does have stag and hen dos but it's nothing like the media has portrayed, irs improved a lot too.

I love not but if I was going on holiday I'd choose Newquay just because there's lots to do and not so hilly as St Ives 😅

I live near Newquay, it's pretty quiet in term time if that's an option. I love Newquay living nearby but I'm bias, it gets a bad reputation but everyone is local.

wheelchair would probably be easier to in Newquay compared to St Ives.

ST ives is more up market, Newquay is more of a typical tacky seaside spot.

Newquay has a zoo, several arcades, aquarium, boating lake, miniature railway and lots more! Several beaches, some easier to get to than others with someone with mobility issues like your gran, some of the steps are steep to the in town beaches.

st Ives is probably more historic.

my son is autistic too, he found St Ives really overwhelming as everyone was packed in the narrow streets but loves Newquay!

there used to be a bus that goes from Newquay to st Ives, an open top but I think it may have stopped.

the shops in St Ives are more independent and unique. Still unique shops in Newquay but has some more known shops too but not great.

newquay has supermarkets in and near the town on walking level compared to St Ives if you are self catering.

it sounds like I'm favouriting Newquay, it's because I live nearby and know more about it but have been to St Ives too. St Ives is definitely 'posher' whereas Newquay is pure tack!

I also love Looe if that's an option.

If you can I would consider term time, I know it's difficult with school but it will be considerably quieter for your son!

I would recommend St Ives, having done both St Ives and Looe pre-kids by train. I don’t know how easy Newquay is by train but for St Ives, you change at St Erth. It is beautiful, and there are lots of beaches walkable from the town centre.

If you’re worried about noise or it being busy, you could always stay a bit further out around Carbis Bay or Lelant (also on the train line) and travel into St Ives.

The bus links from St Ives were good - there were buses to Lands End and also to Marazion for St Michael’s Mount, which is a great day out.
