Suffolk villages

Looking to book a 5 night break in Suffolk and wondering which villages / areas to head for. I haven't been before but have heard Southwold is nice (but pricey) are there any other locations that are also nice?

We are a family so beaches and any sort of sightseeing is what we are after, potentially cycle paths too if there are some but that's not essential. Prefer pretty countryside but near the coast to touristy towns.

Southwold is indeed lovely, as is neighbouring Walberswick. Aldeburgh is also worth a look. Woodbridge is also lovely, great for riverside walks. If you're driving there's loads to do round there - Orford Ness, Shingle Street, Rendlesham Forest, Snape Maltings, Orford Castle, Framingham Castle....Now I want to go myself...

Southwold is indeed lovely but does get super busy in the summer and is quite a touristy town, in a well-heeled Joules sort of way!
Walberswick is gorgeous - nice beach, great for crabbing and The Bell is a fantastic pub with a big garden that serves good food.
Dunwich heath and forest are lovely for walks, Framingham Castle, Snape Maltings. Aldeburgh has a great fish and chip shop and is very arty but not so much for families.
Have a lovely time - my in-laws live there so we've spent many happy summer days in the area.

Ha - didn't realise I'd started my post with the exact same words as the pp! Southwold clearly is, indeed, lovely!!

Thorpeness not mentioned yet. The boating lake is fun.

EllieFredrickson · 03/08/2022 20:30

Agree Thorpeness nice. Walking distance to Aldeburgh. Excellent food at The Lighthouse in Aldeburgh

I was going to say Woodbridge as well, quite central to all the previously mentioned places. Sutton Hoo is close too

I live in Suffolk and highly recommend as previous posts - Southwold/ Aldeburgh/ Thorpeness. Easy to get to and they have some lovely cottages/ holiday homes so close the beaches. Can't beat the chip shops there either 😍.

I live in Suffolk and I don't think much of Southwold tbh.

TheDogsMother · 03/08/2022 20:48

I love our stay in Thorpeness and the walk into Aldeburgh.

You have to visit Sutton Hoo and then drive down to Woodbridge for a pint or Ramsholt Arms used to be v nice. Inland Framlingham Castle is worth a couple of hours wandering.

Notonthestairs · 03/08/2022 21:07

We used to drive to Dunwich (medieval town lost to coastal erosion) near Saxmundham - walk amongst the ruins and then to the beach and finish off with lovely but v expensive fish and chips in the Flora Tearooms (practically on the beach)

If you go further southwest, Lavenham is beautiful and there are some very pretty villages nearby.
