The entire Peak District is there for the taking. There are fabulous walks, nice country pubs and beautiful landscapes. If you like a stately home, try Chatsworth. The grounds there are extensive and lovely to walk in. If you like a market town, try Matlock, Bakewell, Buxton or Ashbourne. Enjoy.

Lovely walks from Hartington itself towards Milldale/Dovedale. Definitely go to Tissington, very close by. Estate village with tea room, old-fashioned sweet shop, garden centre, picturesque pond. Nearest NT is probably Sudbury Hall and Museum of Childhood which I think may be closed at the moment. Closer to Derby is Kedleston Hall. A big vote for Heights of Abraham (cable car and caves). Tramway museum at Crich is great and you get unlimited rides on old-fashioned trams. Cromford fascinating for industrial heritage, at the Mill there is a visitors centre, shops, walks along the canal etc and Scarthin Books in Cromford village is a perfect bookshop.

Ilam Hall is not too far away - an NT property with stunning grounds and lovely walks. There's a tea room and also a family orienteering course. You could also visit the famous stepping stones in Dovedale which are close to Ilam - great for a paddle on a hot day but can get very busy.

If you like walking there is loads of choice from Hartington itself - the path down Wolfscote Dale / Biggin Dale is nice. A bit further afield towards Buxton (if you have a good head for heights) are Chrome Hill and Parkhouse Hill.

As others have said Ilan and Dovedale are both lovely Wink

Matlock Bath has a vintage lido fed by a natural thermal spring, adult only pre book.

Gullivers is fun if you have kids who are under 10. Definitely get up to Chatsworth.

Hartington has the BEST cheese shop in the world!
