Where for food and cocktails in Birmingham?

Have two trips for commonwealth games coming up.
And figured we should get booking a table., if not already too late.

Not interested in Italian or pub food, I live in London but sibling lives rurally and has great options for those locally but misses Thai, Mexican, Caribbean, Japanese...

Ideally somewhere central with cocktails and food. Happy with chains or independents. Budget not an issue, we don't see each other often so happy to splash out.

Also any nice breakfast options?

When we go to Birmingham, we eat in Brindley Place - on the canal behind Symphony Hall and a lovely atmosphere. About ten minutes stroll from the centre.

Nice selection of bars and restaurants.

What about Tattu?

For Mexican - Tierra Tacos in the Jewellery Quarter, just outside the centre (walkable or a v short Uber) - good food and cocktails / actors the road is 1000 Trades which has a cocktail bar upstairs (you'd probably need to book)

In Moseley (bus or cab) there's Chakana which is Peruvian with great cocktails

More centrally, Dishoom

For Thai, Sabai Sabai in the city centre / lots of bars around there too

In Digbeth, Kilo Zero does good drinks and cheese boards

If you want to properly splash out, Opheem - £££ but seriously good

Asha's for a curry
Albert Schloss for great drinks and atmosphere

There are loads of great places! Enjoy!

Thai - Sabai Sabai is the best we have, Siamais is OK but doesn't quite match up.

Mexican - @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie has this category down! Tierra has the best Mexican food in the city, and the cocktail bar across the road, Ikigai, is great, 1000 Trades (the pub) is lovely too and on week days do cracking hefty sandwiches by POSH.

Japanese - Gaijin Sushi. For general Japanese fare I don't know anything great.

Breakfast - Dishoom for Indian brunch, Yorks for classics some dishes with a twist, Damascena Middle Eastern cafe, Chancers for beignets, Morridge for porridge. Many people recommend Medicine and I hugely rate their baked goods to go, but their sit-in is not great awful service and food decidedly average, they gave me a omelette that was black it was so burnt.

Cocktails - Couch, this is out of the way in Stirchley so you will have to get an Uber or the train to Bournville, but well worth it. Ikigai as mentioned above. Fox & Chance.

Fancy - Opheem, also suggested by @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie, is truly incredible. I also love The Wilderness.

Wildcards - Gupshup for the most incredible thick toasties you have ever had. Meat Shack for burgers. Otto for pizza. Tiger Bites Pig for bao buns. Shababs for a proper Balti. Indian Streatery for amazing Indian street food. Pulperia for steak.

Defo 1000 trades! Love it there!

@SummaLuvin has some brilliant suggestions - if you are on Instagram or Twitter have a look at BiteYourBrum (pic attached). She's a fab local who writes and blogs about good places to visit for food and drink she covers a lot of the cuisines you mention so you'd be able to get some good recommendations from her page.

Personally I can't recommend Medicine. Their cakes/pastries are often dry and the coffee is never hot enough. Cooked food is over-priced imo for what it is. Although the one on New Street is a lovely setting.

I've heard good things about this sushi place but haven't been myself.

Agree re Dishoom for breakfast/brunch - personally, I think that's when they're at their best. Pancakes/granola/naans all good, washed down with endless cups of chai.

Damascena for lunch - really competitively priced and nice food, although I don't rate their flatbreads at all. Their juices and milkshakes are good.

Couch is unbelievably good - and if you head out Stirchley way, Birmingham Brewery, Wildcat and Cork & Cage are all great too, as is Attic in Bournville. You've then got Eat Vietnam and Can Eat for lovely food too (if you want to go to the Vietnamese, you'll need to book well ahead).

Yes to Otto (Jewellery Quarter) for pizza and amazing tiramisu.

Agree with @mommybear1 on BiteYourBrum, she comes off really genuine. I am very wary and sceptical of some other food bloggers in the city as I think they just want the free food so hand out glowing reviews left right and centre, but her and Meat And One Veg seem to be honest so worth looking them up.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/07/2022 20:53

Meat and One Veg definitely worth a look. I find Bite My Brum annoying.
