We'll be in Braithwaite for a few days in July (possibly before English schools finish). DS (13) would like to climb a mountain. We did Ben Arthur a couple of years ago (884 metres (2,900 ft)). Knackered afterwards but it wasn't beyond us. Any recommendations? He will not be fobbed off with Cat Bells, it is not a mountain and he will figure this out as it won't take long enough.

inconsiderate parking and congestion here.

cycling round Derwent water one good Friday and watching the traffic warden ticket every single car on the double yellow lines, bet they thought it would be ok to ignore the rules as everyone else was...

Good! It’s the day-tripping idiots (and the boy racers who have NO idea how to drive up here) who spoil the place. And now I sound like Wordsworth and Ruskin who both objected to the railway coming into Cumberland. If only most visitors would use the railway and the buses!

It looks like Skiddaw is safer? Not sure if I'm over worrying about that aspect.

No you’re not. People die every year walking in The Lakes. We read about it all the time in the local papers. Striding Edge is definitely considered one of the most dangerous. Glorious views though!

Skiddaw by the main track (you can see it from town) is pretty safe. The walk itself is a bit boring as a walk, but challenging in the gradients and as a PP says, the views are wonderful. And it’s a very high fell!

Update and thanks for everyone's input. After reading through the thread with husband and son, we did Helvellyn today from Thirlmere car park. We had planned to go by bus but the bus into Keswick did not appear so we missed the bus from Keswick onward. It was either delay for an hour having made a point of being ready for an early start, or 20 mins in the car. The carpark was practically empty.

Amazing views, cloud rolled in at the top but we were happy with the views we had already had, and it was very atmospheric. DS scampered ahead like a mountain goat, as they do. He says he'll remember it for a long time. He clocked as we chatted to other people that once you're up there you can start tagging on additional peaks to your walk, and started pointing out options on the map. Not for us today though.

We also did Catbells from the boat on Sunday, which we all enjoyed.

We arrived on Saturday and have only used the car twice, so thanks to everyone who recommended alternatives. The other time was to get to the lovely cold slate mine for 09.00.

That sounds wonderful! And yes, aiming for Helvellyn gets you other "Wainwrights" as well - one of my favourite warm-up walks for the walking season is:
Grisedale Tarn, above Grasmere, up Dollywaggon Pike, then along the ridge to Helvellyn, and down via Swirls.

It's dead easy navigationally on a clear day especially, and taxing on the legs, but only moderately.

Glad you're finding the buses useful also.
