End of August break in the UK - dog and toddlers

Can anyone recommend an area to visit in the UK for a week at the end of August? We are a family of 4 with 2 children - age 3 and 1. Also have a labrador we'd like to bring! We live in Cheshire but really happy to travel anywhere as we have the time. Last year we went to St Ives (didn't love it - wouldn't return) and the year before that Abersoch. Any other suggestions? Edinburgh is our current idea although we have been before pre kids and loved it. Thanks in advance!

I can bring myself to tell you as it’s SO lovely!! Down south though. Beautiful weather end of august for last 4 years.

i wouldn’t risk Scotland! Last of the summer before auntie on the horizon. Surely you want some sun and proper warmth?!

My advice would be to wait until the schools go back and move your holiday to mid-September. Or to go to Scotland, as I believe schools go back earlier there.
Everywhere will be much quieter and cheaper.

I know @MrsOwainGlyndŵr I wish we could but it's one of the weeks our childcare is closed so we have a rare family week! I'll check out Scotland school dates!

With toddlers and a dog, I’d definitely do a beach holiday, so I’d aim for Scotland in the last week of August as the English beaches will be very busy. Sandyhills is a large sandy beach near Dalbeattie with a café and small shop. Dogs are allowed all year round. There’s also Rockcliffe Beach nearby.

Rhosneigr in Anglesey. I know it’s close to Abersoch but it’s a great base with good places to eat and lovely beaches.

We are removing this while we have a look in the background.

Northumberland is very dog friendly (and it's not that far to carry on up to Edinburgh!)

JustMarriedBecca · 29/06/2022 13:57

Edinburgh is nice if combined with either Elie on the Fife coast or North Berwick.
Northumberland with a trip to Hadrian's Wall en route.
Pembrokeshire
Also Cheshire here and I'd avoid North Wales, Abersoch and Rhosneiger like the plague unless you want to see EVERYONE you already know.

The Isle of Wight? The excitement of the ferry is often huge for little (and bigger) ones. Dogs welcome lots of places, beautiful scenery etc.

The Scottish schools should be back. It depends how far you want to travel. We loved Crieff Hydro I think you can take a dog.

Ah this is perfect guys thank you. I'm leaning towards Scotland and will check out the places that have been mentioned. Thanks!

Maybe check out the Forest of Ae, or Peebles, both of those would suit your needs.

North Berwick is lovely and very quick into Edinburgh on the train. Very dog friendly. Busy in the summer and has it’s own festival.

This is nearby and fab for your age of children.

Edinburgh Fringe is on in August so the city will be heaving. I would avoid it with a dog. The main central bits anyway. Or maybe do dog daycare for your dog. It’s amazing in Edinburgh in August but quite full on so it would be nice to dip in and come back to North Berwick!

Elie in Fife is nice and has lovely walks. But there’s less to do there with toddlers (just beach!)

Pembrokeshire coast is heaven
