Suggestions for U.K. holiday

Can anyone suggest somewhere for an August holiday that I wouldn’t otherwise think of?

We live in South East England. 2 almost teens. Doesn’t need to be beach. Countryside rather than city, though a city nearby is good too. Lots of interesting varied places for days out - eg a castle, a (not too long) beautiful walk, a zoo. But not limited to those things.

Ruled out:

  • Cornwall - too far and too busy

  • Devon - ditto re busy, plus we’ve been several times before

  • Pembrokeshire - I know every inch of it (but for everyone else I highly recommend)

  • Dorset - we went recently and loved it but don’t want to go again just yet

  • East Yorkshire coast around Whitby we went to once briefly, and I loved it, but it’s at least 6 hours so we’d spend a whole day driving each way.

  • Norfolk and Suffolk - we have been there before, maybe would consider again.

I need some fresh inspiration! Thanks.

What about the North West- Chester, Liverpool and surrounding areas?

Thank you, that’s actually perfect! Why didn’t I think of that, see that’s why I needed mumsnet inspiration.

They’re Liverpool fans so an Anfield visit would keep the DC happy. We’ve been to Liverpool for a short stay before for a match, and it looked like a great city but we didn’t have much time. DH and I also went to Chester and Chester zoo before DC1 was born, so it would be good to go when I’m not 6 months pregnant.

Plus we could tag on a few days visit to the in-laws in South Wales by driving along the Welsh coast, I’ve not been to north Wales at all.

Sorted! No other replies needed.

Take the train to save yourself a long drive and use public transport when you arrive for a totally different and refreshing experience. Go to Newcastle and use the metro to stay at the coast. Extensive local trains and buses will take you to Hadrian's Wall, Alnwick Castle, Sea Life Centre, National Glass Centre in Sunderland etc etc Get the train to Durham and see the cathedral. Or stay in Durham and go to Beamish Museum. So much to see and do and a completely different family experience if you leave the car behind.

Stay in Snowdonia for a few days on your way to the GP’s

Northumberland. It really has it all. Marvellous beaches; pretty towns like Alnwick, Hexham, Rothbury; Hadrian’s Wall; Newcastle.

Thanks all.

We've had a great holiday in Northumberland before, including most of those places. It is a very very long drive.

Isle if Wight I love but we’ve done a gazillion times when the DC were tiny.

I’d love to take the train if it was just me an DH. So relaxing, great views. Sadly nothing with our DC is relaxing, a long train journey even less so.

I’ll check out Snowdonia and Derbyshire.
