if so what is it like. my sister loves tacky, chavvy holidays and had her heart set on somewhere like blackpool, skeggie, great yarmouth etc but when i went on the sun website there was hardly anywhere left for the dates we can go. so do you think any of those places will fit the bill? they did have a pontins site in blackpool but it hasn't got very good reviews so don't really want to go there.

Not Weymouth - there are bits of it that are like that but not a lot. The front isn't full of arcades and kiss me quick hat sellers. There is a lovely old harbour and a decent but not very up market shopping centre but I think she would be disappointed.

Eastbourne is nice - lots of older people go there to sit on the front and admire the flowers. Not very many arcades or lights there. Does have a lot of caravan parks on the outskirts.

I have only been to Chichester once and I would say it was actually up market. It has a harbour and the main town is not even by the sea. The least likely of the bunch to suit.

Mind you of the places you have listed, I have only been to Great Yarmouth so I'm no expert. However, I prefer quaint and old to tacky and chavvy and the three I mention I quite like.

Actually, Poole has some of the most expensive property in the country (Sandbanks). It is famous for its harbour and for its pottery. I haven't been since I was a child but I doubt that would suit either. You might have more luck in nearby Bournemouth.

have you been to bournemouth then?

Filey not far from where I grew up. It's not tacky or chavvy in my opinion, some georgeous houses and beautiful scenery. Always liked it but wouldn't fit the bill i don't think!

I have been to Bournemouth but last time I went it was on a course and that was 9 year ago. It is very popular with very crowded beaches and a long esplanade which makes me think it is a bit like Blackpool but somebody else might be better placed than me to comment properly as I couldn't tell you whether it is full of arcades and lights.

How about Bognor, Margate or Southend or any of the other places where there they have Butlins? I went to Southend once - they would probably fit the bill.

My sister lives in Bournemouth. Sounds like the kind of place your sister would like. Lots of traditional seaside things - arcades, pier, rides, a train on the front, sandy beaches, good shopping centre etc. I love it!

Weymouth used to be ok too but I haven't been there for many years.

What about Scarborough? or Bridlington?

mummyvontummy · 14/01/2008 03:05

Filey is lovely. Went to Folkestone for the day, was a bit full of fish and chip restaurants and oldies but wouldn't say it was particularly chavvy, just small xx

I live near Folkestone and Dover, I wouldn't rate them for holidays really - there are a lot of asylum seekers hanging around in the streets, not very comfortable atmosphere. Nice prom at Folkestone though, but I wouldn't go in the sea as it is right by a huge harbour and so very polluted.

Rochester is Ok if you like Dickens and castles. It isn't sunny though!

fireflytoo · 14/01/2008 08:06

Filey would be my choice out of the lot as there is loads to do with kids in the area. Scarborough would be even better. If you do go to Filey I would make a point of taking a whole day out to Kinderland in Scarborough. It is the biggest and best designed playground we have come across. Just take your own coffee as theirs tastes like popcorn.. There are also lots of tacky available along the coast not far from Filey AND there are some other less tacky things too.

i live nr chi - its not chavvy at all its got old buildings and cathedral - bit quaint.

there is a butlins in bognor - very chav

I really really reeeaaaallly wouldn't go on holiday to Dover. Folkestone not so bad at all - how about Deal - nice caravan park at Kingsdown? Or Herne Bay? Or chavtastic Margate?

Rochester's a few nice streets and a castle tacked on to the edge of Chatham - which is a bit of a dump not fabulous.

I have been to Poole and Bournemouth, Bournemouth is probably more chav-tastic, but it is nothing like Blackpool.

We stayed in Bournemouth which was really nice, felt almost like a foreign holiday, but we had fantastic weather which I think made the difference.

We spent the day in Poole on my 18th, was a lovely place, but nowhere near as brightlights and fancy filled as Bournemouth.

Blackpool is a different kettle of fish, awful dirty beach, a sea that the fishes don't like living in, row after row of tacky shops selling even tackier crap, and lap dancing or strip bars everwhere. The only thing it is good for is the (indoor) swimming oasis thing (I forget the name the name of it now, but it is next to the south (I think) pier) and the pleasure beach. My SIL took her kids to the Pontins there, she said she wouldn't go back if someone paid her a thousand pound.

I went to Camber for a Fitness Fiesta weekend, last year. It was self enclosed, not chavy as such, but well minging. But we had the best time.
Chichester is well poo-sh and not at all chavy.
I like Bournemouth. It is a tiny bit chavy I suppose.
Poole is lovely.
I lived in Weymouth for a short time, found it quit chavy and run down, but that was a few years ago now.

nappyaddict · 14/01/2008 14:05

meh it looks like she shall have to give up her idea of a blackpool type holiday .. pheeeeeeew. i'm liking the sound of bournemouth, weymouth or poole i think. or maybe filey.
