Where to visit between Cornwall and Liverpool?

We have 4 days to kill travelling between Newquay and Liverpool in mid July. We’ve never been down that way before (from Scotland). Would really appreciate ideas on where to visit. Should we go into Wales? Will have camping gear and young teen in tow!

Do you want to spend 4 days in one place, or move along a bit every day?
I'd say your journey breaks into 3 chunks...
Getting out of the south west (up to Bristol)
Getting to the midlands (Birmingham)
Heading north

If you wanted just one stop, I'd say go for the Cotswolds (so between stage 1 and stage 2 of the journey above). Completely different from the coast/Cornwall, and not too much of a deviation. Also very different from Scotland.
You could base yourself somewhere outside one of the towns like Stow, Moreton in Marsh, Broadway etc and visit lots of the area in 4 days. It will be much more pleasant if your 4 days are midweek (all the hotspots are rammed at the weekends!)

Wales is lovely, but the south coast will add a fair bit of journey time, and the north coast you're virtually in Liverpool.

If you wanted more than one stop, maybe do one night in Dorset/Somerset, one somewhere south of Birmingham (maybe close to the Welsh border) and one on the northern side of Birmingham (perhaps deviating towards the Peak District). That's only 3 nights, but perhaps one of them is a 2 night stop.

I'd stick with 4 nights in one place though...

Cotswolds is a good call, there are some lovely lakes around where you can do paddleboarding and stuff (Cotswolds water park I think) and the wildlife park is the best I've ever been to, really nicely done. Some nice villages and towns too.

I will definitely look at the Cotswolds - thanks so much

Come to Bristol we’re lovely!

So many good possibilities along that route. Cheddar Gorge and Wookey Hole, Bath, Stratford Upon Avon (or perhaps Warwick Castle) and Ironbridge Gorge would be my stops. But I think I’d need more than four days!

Cheltenham or Bath

Worcester would be a good base near the M5 and handy for trips to the Malvern hills, the Cotswolds and Stratford-upon-Avon. Have a great trip!

Bristol and Bath. They are only about 20 minutes apart by train.

Ludlow is also lovely and well worth a visit.

If you want it a bit quieter, Shropshire/Welsh borders, as PP suggested, Ludlow is lovely. There is a good chance that even in July this area won't be anywhere near as rammed as some other places (unless it has changed massively since I was last there, sadly too long ago!)

Depends on the type of teen though to some degree Grin
