Shoreham, Sussex what to do during the jubilee weekend which doesnt involve the jubilee?

We're down that way during the long weekend and I'd like to visit some gardens, not too big as walking is tricky at the moment.

Ive found Borde Hill and Leonardslee which look nice, bit of a drive from Shoreham though.

However I really do want to avoid any jubilee type events or stuff, I dont want to end up driving around the area and then arrive slap bang in a village or town having some do.

Any other ideas? I dont want foresty/woodland gardens or walks, Im looking for inspiration for our own backgarden ideally!

You could visit Brighton, the Pavilion perhaps, or the Aquarium.

Sorry, check if Glastonwick (music and beer festival) is on at Coombes Farm.

bellac11 · 24/05/2022 20:32

Yes thanks Ive always wanted to visit the Pavillion but OH doesnt like Brighton since he got a parking ticket years ago (bears a long grudge!)

High down is nice

Also Nymans

terriblyangryattimes · 24/05/2022 20:34

Nymans (national trust) is a pretty quick journey, they have gorgeous gardens and some more wild gardens too (over the road through a gate) plus proper woodlands if you wanted to avoid people allll day!

mosside · 24/05/2022 20:34

Leonardslea is lovely

nomistake · 24/05/2022 20:37

Shoreham beach, devils dyke, Brighton (by train if avoiding parking fines! A few mins from shoreham), Worthing town and beach, arundel and arundel Castle, Highdown gardens is nice and has a good pub and tea room.

Parham house and gardens isn't far. Highdown def recommend and there's a pub next door.

missfliss · 24/05/2022 20:39

Shoreham beach
Bramber castle & Steyning Festival
Shoreham Art Deco airport and cafe
Nymans gardens
Woods Mill
Fulking / Edburton / Devils Dyke

bellac11 · 24/05/2022 20:41

Yes I looked at Nymans but Ive got an injury so cant walk far so trying to avoid bigger places, looks great though
Its more formal gardens I want to look at for inspiration rather than devils dyke/beachy type things and certainly wouldnt be able to walk around those at the moment

Yes the problem with Brighton is that we would need to drive (I was being a bit tongue in cheek as if I could walk further we would go to the Pavilion!) but I dont have a blue badge so parking would be tricky, the last time we went to Brighton it wasnt as car unfriendly as it is now so it puts me off.

Arundel is an idea, I think I went there years ago. Very grand!

Shoreham beach has a boardwalk to help people with accessibility issues.

At Nymans they have lovely formal gardens and you can borrow wheelchairs if needed

Helenahandkart · 24/05/2022 21:02

Check out the houseboats on the river at Shoreham - some of them are incredible.

bellac11 · 24/05/2022 21:06

Yes Shoreham I definitely want to visit so the beach sounds doable then and the lovely boats

I might re look at Nymans then, it certainly looked amazing online

I would imagine that Arundel would be be very busy over the Jubilee weekend.
