We'll be travelling from north west Wales to Somerset at the end of August. I'm thinking we could stop somewhere on the journey for a night or two. We have two kids (4 & 6) and was wondering if anyone could recommend anywhere to visit? Either a day out for the kids or just somewhere beautiful to enjoy the great outdoors. Looking at the map mid way would be kind of Wrexham, Shrewsbury, that sort of area. Any ideas? The alternative is we drive through mid Wales and find somewhere stunning to enjoy a few days of British countryside but again I'd appreciate any pointers to focus my searching.

Maybe a bit out of the way, but at about that range is Symonds Yat. It's a gorgeous little village on two sides of a the river. Boat trips, and the barge across the river are lovely.

I've not stayed there, but I fancy staying at the Saracen's Head.

Ironbridge Gorge is brilliant and there’s so much for kids to do www.ironbridge.org.uk/explore/ We stayed at the Shakespeare Inn which is a quaint pub with a large garden (including a decent play area) and rooms (the spacious family room had bunk beds for the dc).
We’ve also done a stop-over at West Midlands Safari Park and stayed in one of the safari-style tents at Ling Safari.

Amazing suggestions. Thank you so much. I'm off to have a look :)

The RAF Museum at Cosford near Telford is free and under cover which is useful if it is wet.

British Camp hill fort in the Malvern Hills is stunning - fantastic views - a bit hilly but not too taxing.
