Who old is your son?
the zoo is a full day out. Take a picnic as the food offerings are pretty rubbish and make sure you catch the penguin parade which is usually early afternoon 🐧
dynamic earth, camera obscura, national museum are all good with younger kids.
the castle is expensive and very heavy on Scottish and military history so I think most of it is wasted on children.
there’s Harry Potter walking tours.
If he’s too small to get up Arthur’s seat then Calton hill is a short easy climb and gives you good views.
portobello beach and amusement arcade
maid of the forth boat trip
aquadash at the commonwealth pool
there’s a big play area at the east end of the meadows and a little one at the west end of princes street gardens
take a ride on the tram (my friend’s kids are country bumpkins, this was the most exciting thing ever!!)
explore the closes off the royal mile
gladstones land if you have national trust membership
The Lego shop in the new st James quarter shopping centre. (Remortgage house first!)

oh ok, he's too young for some of those things then! My friend's kids loved the National museum from being tiny though - the animal room and interactive technology bit in particular and there used to be a room where there was things to play with.
There's a bridge behind the bandstand in Princes Street gardens (the thing that looks like a stage more than a bandstand!) which has clear sides so you can wave to the trains going in and out of Waverley but last time I went past it was closed off (but that was a few months ago). If it's shut you can get free access into Waverley station concourse and the platforms where the big London trains depart from if he likes trains.
Will you have a car? If so, Almond Valley or East Links farm parks are good for little ones.
