Best beaches in England

Looking for recommendations of good places for an England/UK based beach holiday.

Don't want to go abroad due to cost/plane travel with a toddler/covid impacting on travel delays etc. We are looking for a 5/7 day break in England/UK.

Yorkshire based but would be able to travel up to 5 hours. It would be 5-7 adults and a toddler - august time.

I have combed the previous threads and just starting a new one in case of new recommendations.

Wells-next-the-Sea, Brancaster and Hunstanton in Norfolk.
Bamburgh, Alnmouth and Seahouses in Northumberland

What do all the 5-7 adults need or want to do apart from time on the beach?

Rural hikes?

Historic houses, museums?

Pubs/bars shopping/entertainment?

What sort of UK beach holidays have they done before that they enjoyed or didn’t like?

I think a mistake will be hoping to replicate a hot abroad beach holiday in the UK - eg expecting to sunbathe or be in the beach all day. Might be lucky but also might need waterproofs etc, plans for wet weather days.

Are you looking for hotel or large house for you all?

Re costs you will be surprised. We had a beach holiday in August last year and one week in a damp and small airbnb was nearly 2k. We could have definitely gone abroad for that but I was heavily pregnant. I would even be surprised if many places are still available in August.

we like Dorset but probably a bit far for you.

Northumberland beaches are beautiful but they're not typically "beach resorts" in the way that somewhere like Scarborough is if that's the sort of thing you're looking for? But there's plenty of things to see and do in the area other than sit on a beach.

North Devon
Woolacombe, Putsborough, Croyde, Saunton Sands....

Melonportal · 21/04/2022 10:50

Whitley Bay/Tynemouth?

emmathedilemma · 21/04/2022 11:57

ooh yes, Whitley Bay is a good call! Lovely beach and a nice flat prom for the buggy and still within easy driving distance of attractions in Northumberland or a day trip into Newcastle on the Metro.

Bear in mind that popular places will be very very busy. I couldn't contemplate a holiday in Devon at that time of year.

Another one saying a week in August in a nice UK cottage is likely to be more expensive than going abroad.

The beach at saltburn is gorgeous and rarely too crowded. the walks are lovely, the pier pleasant. Probably not a huge amount else to do, but whitby is not much further down and easily driveable.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 25/04/2022 11:10

Well, it's not England, but the beaches in and around North Berwick are lovely. Gullane in particular. It's not really a 'sunbathing on the beach' kind of place though.

ginislife · 25/04/2022 11:12

Tenby or The Gower in South Wales. Might be further than 5 hours though.

Ellmau · 25/04/2022 22:41

Bournemouth. Lovely golden sand beach.

Saltburn

Emerald874 · 27/04/2022 22:17

I love the Jurassic Coast 😍

Stokey · 02/05/2022 09:02

I'd go to Wales. Pembrokeshire coast or Gower, miles of pristine white sandy beaches .
