I’m going to London with DH and DC for a few days and we would love to go to the theatre but it is SO expensive!! Any tips or tricks on getting cheaper tickets would be very much appreciated, also is it safe to travel after a theatre show back to hotel on tube with children aged 10-12? This is a last minute trip for us so all recommendations no matter how big or small are very welcome! Thank you!

What did you want to see, matinee performances are cheaper. Wowcher and Groupon also have offers. Yes the tube is safe but you never guarantee that anywhere, where abouts are you staying. There might be free outdoor theatre performances on in London on the days you are there, free London has loads of free events. Have you got plans to do other stuff yet.

Thank you for your replies! I know it will be safe but your reassurance helps me a great deal. We’re staying near Kings Cross station. I was told about the half price tickets website (same as the one on Leicester Square?) but they’re still really expensive!

We’re going tomorrow to Wednesday. We’re going to do usual touristy stuff, Tower of London, Madame T, London Eye, Palace, etc, so we have a pretty full on day schedule but would have been lovely to go to the theatre tomorrow or Tuesday evening but not when each ticket costs £80 upwards!

Todaytix is a good app for tickets. Or try the last minute tickets booths as pp said. Or go for something that is not West End, there are some great lower price shows, particularly for kids.

I'd save your money from Madame T and even the eye tbh. Do the theatre instead and replace those things with free museums/activities.

Agreed. Definitely don't both with Madame T's and only do the Tower if the kids are really interested.

Thank you all, the kids really want to do the ‘usual’ touristy attractions and they’re interested in the Tower of London for history. I would have loved to take them to Shakespeare’s Globe but it was full. Thank you for your suggestions! ❤️

I don't think there are physical ticket booths in Leicester Square any more, pretty sure it was all boarded up when we were there a couple of weeks ago... a Londoner might be able to confirm?

There's definitely a booth - it's just moved slightly.

Or go to your chosen theatre for 10am for day tickets.

There are plenty of tickets available for the guided tour at The Globe on Wednesday. You could also visit The Tate Modern next door, walk over The Milenium Bridge to St Pauls or get the river uber boat from The Tate to The Tower or go the other way to Hampton Court.

Book preview seats for Bonnie and Clyde. I just booked a couple for £24.50 this week. It's going to be one of the big shows of the summer, has an amazing cast and (unless there's been a flurry of booking) there are some great seats available for reasonable prices.

Actually just seen that you're off with pre-teen DCs, possibly not ideal then (I've not seen it yet, but, yannow murder spree!)

Front row tickets for Cinderella on Tuesday night at £36 each (and there's six in a row). It's not the best show I've ever seen but it's fun enough, child friendlyish and at that price for those seats I'd consider it!

Day seats. Go by the theatre before the evening performance. And I agree I would be scratching Madame T. In my opinion it's a tourist trap and not worth it.

How about Mary Poppins for £24 a seat matinee or evening on Wednesday?

It's in the gods, but (spoiler) that'll give you a magical view of some lovely bits. It's a wonderful show. We went at New Year as a family group with people aged from 4 to 83 (including a 6, 8 and 9 year old) and everyone was smitten.

We got £20 tickets for Lion King booking directly with Disney. They were restricted view due to a hand rail but at 5 foot 4 we looked right through the gap and saw everything! The folk next to us paid £60 a ticket.

We also go cheap tickets for Cinderella using the spare tickets Facebook group. Someone was selling tickets last minute.

We travelled back to Kings Cross and it was busy and totally fine. It's not the Kings Cross of old.
