Cycling the tow path between Edinburgh and Glasgow

Staying in Falkirk later in the year on the canal and hoping to do the Glasgow to Edinburgh canal in 2 stages, I picked Falkirk because it looked sort of half way

Any tips about cycling this route, I take it it is flat, is the towpath surfaced all the way? We are both fairly nervous and slow, very much the leisure cyclist.

Also I notice that near the Falkirk wheel, there are some off shoot cycle paths which go through a forest, are these doable for 2 oldies who have hybrid e bikes?

Also any restaurant or tourist recommendations would be very welcome

Weird, I thought i replied to this yesterday!
Anyway, I'm not that familiar with the cycle path all the way along but it's used by a lot of commuters and my understanding is that you should be fine on e-hybrids.
The Falkirk Wheel and Kelpies are well worth a visit.
Linlithgow might be close enough to cycle to as it's right on the canal. the palace is currently closed but may be open by the time you visit.
Glasgow and Edinburgh are easy day trips by train (don't bother trying to take the car and park!), or for Edinburgh drive to Ingliston park & ride and take the tram into the city (£1.80 single fare).
Callendar Park in Falkirk is nice and you should be ok to cycle.
You could cycle across the Forth Road Bridge from South Queensferry (it has a cycle lane, you don't have to use the main carriageway).
Stirling castle, Wallace monument and Bannockburn visitor centre. Doune and Dunblane and nice villages for a wander and coffee.
You could also be at Loch lomond in just over an hour's drive or Callander is less than an hour and always feels like I've arrived in the highlands.

Thank you, I hadnt thought of driving out to be honest, but if its only an hour, we have been to Loch Lomand before on our way to Oban some years ago. We had normal bikes then and tried the cycle route from a little village to where the ferry is, didnt get very far as too unfit and it rained like no ones business so thats an idea that we could re try it.
