Overnight in London

My husband (both early 30s). has surprised me with a night in London at the end of May. We will be at the Royal Albert Hall for a lunchtime event on the Saturday but then have Saturday evening and Sunday morning to fill.

Can anyone recommend -

-an area to stay in (looking for a decent hotel as well)
-a restaurant for evening dinner (not Michelin star or taster menus - more like decent quality British cuisine)
-a breakfast/brunch place

We're based near Manchester and haven't been to London for years so not sure of the best areas to stay! We will be getting the train.

I like staying in Kings Cross Euston area as near the train for going home and you can dump your bag easily.

Lots of decent hotels.

Dishoom in new Kings Cross does the most amazing breakfast.

Euston isn't the handiest for Albert Hall but you can make a lovely walk there.

It sounds like you will be arriving in the morning and some hotel rooms are not ready until around 2pm. I would stay near the Albert Hall, the Hilton at Queens Terrace is good and really nearby, you might be able to leave your bag there and freshen up in the bathroom. What station are you arriving at.

Thank you! Will check out Dishoom. Makes sense to stay near Euston!

Thanks @BlanketsBanned - we will be getting into Euston. We will be at RAH from 1230 for a few hours so happy to bring bags. If we're allowed to bring a case to RAH actually?! Need to look into that.

The Thistle hotel Euston was pretty good when we stayed there, its only over the road from the station. The RAH have restaurants if you need a snack. Give yourselves plenty of time to get to the RAH, if jts the bank holiday weekend it will be extra busy and the tubes and buses have had strikes recently plus the demonstrations slow everything down.

It was the euston hilton, not thistle. We stay there as you know what to expect.

For great British food try the Coal Shed by Shad Thames / Tower Bridge. It's a great setting. You could go to the south bank for the evening and walk there, via the Oxo Tower where you could stop for a cocktail with a view if you fancy.

For Euston and travelling to ROH plus getting about it makes sense to stick around Bloomsbury, or West End area, then you can access both Northern and Piccadilly Lines as well as walk to the Strand / south bank or Covent Garden etc.

Depending on your taste Quaglinos in St James does a great brunch? It would be close to the area you're staying in.

In Kings Cross, Vinoteca is nice for a few drinks. Spiritland is a great, chilled bar with interesting DJ sets.

Dishoom for breakfast as said, or Granger and Co.

@mrshadders I meant to say OP, the very best place for breakfast / lunch or Sunday mornings generally would be Borough Market, right by London Bridge station. Absolutely brilliant to look around and take your pick of fantastic restaurants, brasseries, cafes or market stalls for food. You can quickly go straight to Euston from there too.

If you haven't already then download CityMapper app to check tube and bus routes and plan journeys.
