An afternoon in London

Will be arriving at lunchtime and will have 5/6 hours available.

The ideal scenario would be an exhibition/museum, a mooch in a bookshop or Liberty or somewhere of that ilk, plus a really nice late lunch and then maybe a bar.

Any suggestions? Budget is reasonable but not unlimited.

I would do the Francis Bacon exhibition at the RA (ends mid April), mooch in the big Waterstones on Piccadilly and/or Hatchards, lunch at the Wolseley.

Or, the Wallace Collection, lunch at Fischers on MHS, mooch in Liberty.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/03/2022 15:39

Thanks for this.

Bacon already done! I don't really like the Wallace Collection to be honest, unless there's something new/specific on there.

There is a restaurant called 'The Stoke House' on Buckingham Palace Road ... best food I have ever had in London! Relatively inexpensive too x

urbanbuddha · 29/03/2022 15:45

The Photographers' Gallery is not far from Liberty's. Afternoon tea at Claridges instead of lunch?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/03/2022 16:15

Thanks for these. Need something 'bigger' than the Photographers' Gallery, I think.

Afternoon tea a good shout. We'll be in trainers though, so can't go anywhere too posh. The Wolseley would be good, but it would be nice to try somewhere new.

I don't actually want to go to Liberty btw, so it doesn't need to be near there. Just somewhere I might be able to 'pop into' without OH moaning too much, as it's in between culture and food!

Not sure how central you want/need to be but what about spending a few hours along the southbank? It's only a few mins walk from Waterloo.
You could go to the Tate, which is great, there's a nice book shop too, just the walk along the river is nice in itself, its usually quite lively and good for people watching too. Plenty of nice places to get a drink/eat and a few nice steet food type places too.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/03/2022 16:35

Thank you. Have done the Tate Modern fairly recently and the restaurants are all a bit chainy, unless anybody can advise otherwise.

Is there anywhere nice to eat near Tate Britain?

urbanbuddha · 29/03/2022 16:39

I've always meant to try The Vincent Rooms. It's walkable from Tate Britain in trainers.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/03/2022 16:44

Good call! It's never been open/available at times I've looked before. Going to investigate that right now! Thank you.

Cinnamon Club?

MangoReinhardt · 29/03/2022 16:54

I don't really like the Wallace Collection to be honest, unless there's something new/specific on there.

They have a new exhibition soon on the influence of French rococo art on Walt Disney- I imagine if you don’t like the Wallace Collection generally you will absolutely hate it 😂

The Courtauld and lunch at the Delaunay is a good combo.

Heartshapedeyes · 29/03/2022 16:57

I can recommend Capricci which is right near the Tate.
Lovely Italian food..but then again, I don't mind abit of Leon or The Real Greek, so I'm probably not the best to recommend posh places to eat op!

Hbh17 · 29/03/2022 17:02

Swan at The Globe is a lovely restaurant if you are on the south bank.

For culture, the newly-reopened Courtauld at Somerset House is well worth a visit, & not too big.

Soffit · 29/03/2022 17:04

Bob Marley exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery near Sloane Square station (or even any of the other rooms - it is a lovely space), then lunch at one of many places - perhaps the Comptoir Libanais just round the corner from it if you are worried about time.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/03/2022 17:05

It doesn't necessarily need to be posh @Heartshapedeyes although we've saved on not flying abroad so we can justify a bit of a treat!

I'll see what's happening at the Courtauld.

Not been to the Delauney before, although like both Zedel and the Wolseley. I can't see afternoon tea on their menu anymore though, which would be imo the main reason to go there!

Cinnamon Club looks great, but a terrible meal at one of their 'sister' cheaper ones has put me off them a bit. I'll have a look at their lunch set menu. Thanks.

There are nice furniture shops all along the road including Peter Jones across the road.

KateLumley · 29/03/2022 17:11

Swan at the Globe do an amazing afternoon tea.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/03/2022 17:15

Sorry, @Soffit but neither Bob Marley nor furniture are appealing! Grin

Grin That okay.
Babymamamama · 29/03/2022 18:29

The restaurant inside Tate Britain used to be quite nice. Not sure what it’s like post Covid.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/03/2022 17:41

Thanks @Babymamamama I'll have a look.

Placemarking as I am doing the same in a couple of weeks.

Are there any good all day restaurants who would be open around 4pm?
