We are heading to Cornwall from Yorkshire at Easter and are breaking the journey with a night in Bristol. We will probably arrive after lunch on Good Friday. What should we do for the afternoon? I have two teenagers- 18 and 15. Open to all suggestions!

Where on Bristol are you staying?

Handsnotwands · 19/03/2022 18:35

Depends on the type of people you are

Shopping
Walk around looking at Banksy
Hang around the harbour eating and drinking
Walk around Clifton / the bridge / the downs

Love Bristol. There’s something for everyone

Stick to the harbourside. It’s a nice walk with cafes and bars, boats to look at, museums and galleries (MShed, Spike Island, Arnolfini, underfall Yard), a steam train for novelty rides (during school holidays). It’s a 2km round walk, and heaps to do all the way round + views of the suspension bridge at the Cumberland Basin end.

If the weather’s nice, I’d go to the Clifton Suspension Bridge and the nearby observatory with its Camera Obscura, which lets you look down on the bridge and see people going about their daily business unaware they are being watched. You can also go underground to see the cave system. In addition, they have a little outdoor café, perfect for afternoon tea.

If you're around the harbour you can get a hop on hop off ticket for the ferry. One of the stops is outside the SS Great Britain.

Harbourside. The Mshed has Wildlife Photographer of the year.
I think you can also see the Colston statue if you book.
I also second Clifton and the observatory with kids.
Millennium sq is nice for running about with water features and has a good science museum and an aquarium if you fancy those.

Depends where you are staying but if in Clifton, you can easily spend an afternoon shopping, mooching, cafe sitting, walking across the bridge taking in the views.

Or if you were fans of Grayson Perry's Art Club during lockdown, the exhibition is currently on at the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery. But you would have to prebook.

There's several museums, ss Great Britain, Clifton suspension bridge. For food our kids love za za bazaar- deluxe buffet type place, ideal for teens with bottomless stomachs. As mine are over 18 they prefer drinking cocktails as preferred activity in Bristol!

Suspension bridge and/or street art. Harbour side for an evening mooch and dinner. Not sure if Good Friday affects openings though?

RupertTheBear · 20/03/2022 10:05

Thanks so much for all the ideas. We aren't actually staying in Bristol but nearby. We will probably head for the harbour and take it from there!

In that area SS Great Britain is a must see.
