Advice on London theatre tickets

Just wondered if anybody has any tips for me please!

We are planning a weekend in London and I’d love to go and see a show. It’s been years since we last had the chance.

I looked at booking something a while ago but unless I sat right at the back, I couldn’t really justify the cost. I’d read a bit about last minute and on the day tickets and raffles and thought I might give that a go nearer the time.

Has anybody done this and is it worth it? Or have I got no chance of winning one of the raffles?

You might get lucky or try TKTS online or the booth in Leicester Square. Some theatres may still offer day tickets if you can arrive early (10am ish) and queue. These are often returns and good seats.

Have a look on a seat view site, such as seatplan.com/ as it will show you what the view is like and reviews from various places- you could see if a cheaper seat is going to be ok.

Midweek matinees and shows are often the best for discounts but that won't help you at a weekend. But if you are happy to chance what you see, then the Leicester Square booth is a good idea.

It's London theatre 'week' at the moment, you can book cut price tickets for shows in the next few months. We went a couple of days ago, tickets were about half their normal price.

Have also done lotteries but they might be tricky if you need to travel as often there is little notice. Got some for Matilda and Fleabag that way. I've also done all of the Hamilton lotteries for a few years but no luck there!

We always head to the ticket booth in Leicester Square and choose from their available shows. Would recommend Jamie, And Juliet, only Fools.

You could try the TodayTix app, they release tickets in the morning. I tried over half term but the tickets went too fast for the show we wanted and had a max of 2 tickets per order. We were very happy with the theatre week prices though.

Saw Les Mis at the weekend - Sat matinee - booked a couple of weeks before. We had 'restricted view' seats which were fine, and £30 cheaper than the adjacent seat.

My mum when visiting has done this on a number of occasions but is by herself whilst I am at work. Usually has gone to the theatre itself, but the Leicester Square booth is worth a try.

There is a good chance. Few years ago I entered Aladin and school of rock and got both first time. I have tried Cinderella couple of times but not got that. Got pantoland on one try as well.

Definitely look up the seat plan reviews or FWLT Facebook group for hints and tips.

I used to do this quite often when I was a student in London years ago. I am happy to know the booth is still there . You have to be open to seeing whatever they have tickets for but I remember seeing some wonderful plays and musicals for half price ( though even that was too expensive for stalls tickets for me at the time Grin). I'm not sure how much they are reduced now but if you go there first thing, you have a ticket and then can go sightseeing/ shopping/ have lunch etc and have a whole day out

This thread has reminded me that I also sometimes got tickets by going to the theatre itself in the morning to see what they had left but the Leicester Square booth was my favourite as I could usually find something I wanted to see for a price I was willing to pay but sometimes the individual theatres didn't have anything suitable for me.

we're booked for a london trip next month. DS really wanted to see Six so we booked those tickets at the time of booking accommodation but went for box seats as they were fairly cheap and we can live with a restricted view if we get extra legroom.

we'd originally planned to just go to the half price ticket booth but used london theatre week to book Lady in Black and Come From Away as we're planning on doing stuff every day and didn't want to be tied to leicester sq area two mornings if not absolutely necessary. been a few years since we were down but got really good seats from the ticket booth for school of rock one visit and then a play with john malkovich the second visit.

i used theatre monkey to try and get the best value tickets in the middle-range so that we avoid the gods cause i don't like to be that high up.

good luck - hope you get something you want to see!

Thanks everyone! I was logged on to the TodayTix app right on 10am but didn’t stand a chance! So we went to the LS box office and got Phantom tickets which I was pretty pleased with.
