Can anyone suggest an excellent overnight stay in NW England with older kids this weekend

We've had major upheaval this year. I have the extremely rare chance to stay somewhere overnight with my children (10/16) this Saturday. They've been through loss and major life changes and have given without question and with love. Cost does matter but I'd love to take them somewhere special, they really deserve it. They'd love a hotel with a pool but also any (warm?) camping/glamping type stays too. Would need to be northwest England, south of Lakes. Any ideas?

Please, God, let the UK Travel page be a buzzing hive of activity tonight.

Liverpool is fun and lots to do- check the age limits obviously but loved the cavern club and everyone was so friendly. I stayed right by the Mersey, not sure if there was a pool, were too busy.

Buxton is another idea - the palace has a pool, bit faded glory and don't book a evening dinner package as there's lovely pubs that allow kids in far nicer- see group on for deals, there's usually plenty. Another thought is Chester and go to the zoo. Walking in the hills is a good free activity.

@gogohm thanks so much for responding, excellent ideas, thank you! We'd ideally be off for lots of walks in Lake District but need to be able to get back in emergency. Much appreciated.

There's a forest holidays site at Delamere. They don't have a pool but some, if not all, lodges have a hot tub. There's mountain bike hire and go ape in the forest and a parkrun on Saturday morning or you could hop on the train into Chester.

Oh is it only one night? What about a nice hotel in Manchester City centre? Most of the posher ones have a pool.
Or there's a Premier Inn at the Trafford centre - bowling, cinema, shopping, crazy golf and indoor skiing and ski diving all a stones throw away.

Straysocks · 25/02/2022 08:19

@emmathedilemma I had forgotten about Delamere, thank you! Maybe not a Forest Holiday but there will be other places. Think rural would work best but also thinking of the skiing place in Manchester now you mention it., that would be good too. Loads to search, thank you.

Alton Towers? There a hotel at the water park

If you're looking at Delamere, Lady Heyes in Frodsham has glamping tents. You'd need to drive from there to Delamere though.

Think you'd need to drive from anywhere nearby though TBH.

Straysocks · 25/02/2022 08:48

@Imonlyhereforthehandwringing I've just emailed them. Kids would love a hot tub. They also only do long weekends but have sent an email on off chance, thank you.

@ChuckBerrysBoots I'll put Alton Towers on the list in case this ever happens again!

How about the village hotel in Chester?
It has a pool and is usually not too expensive.
Then you have the choice of Chester, Liverpool or surrounding countryside.

Brook Mollington Manastre hotel near Chester has family rooms for just over £200 if that's any good?

Or the Worsley park Marriot is 3 miles away from the Trafford centre, nice walk in Worsley woods nearby and has a pool and you can get a family room for less than £200.

I agree Worsley Marriott is a good call, teens should enjoy The Trafford Centre

Kendal
Grange over sands
Ambleside
Coniston

You could try Ribby Hall which is at the end of the M55, approx 20 mins off the M6 and about an hour from the south Lakes. They have accommodation and a pool.

I went to delamere this week but it was closed due to storm damage so check that before you decide.

@ChateauMargaux @Partyatnumber10
I had a good look at the spa/hotel suggestions, thank you. Because we have the whole day into eve on Sunday it feels wrongly weighted for a hotel. Only by looking at the sites did I realise this so you really helped me narrow it down.

@DogsAndGin We love the Lakes but this time it's too far as we may need to get back in an emergency

@Gherkingreen I've had my eye on Robby Hall, it looks ace. They are only doing 3 night stays, which means it is way above my price range. Definitely one for summer though.

@Funf What a fabulous website that is, we'll be back to them for sure.

Going through the suggestions made me realise that what we actually want is a cabin/pod type thing with a fire pit/hot tub. Seems these are 3 night breaks. It also made me realise that we'd be better to be free from morning rather than evening. I found a place with a converted helicopter for one night that would have been perfect but was booked - so we have somewhere to head for next time. I've discovered so many places for us for next time, thanks for contributing.
