York to Fife/Edinburgh/Glasgow

We’ve got a few days in York over Easter booked.

When we leave our hotel, we have a drive home to Fife. We aren’t in any rush to get home. The hotel check out is 10 am.

We can drive home via Carlisle or we can come up through the borders and the bypass round Edinburgh. I am just wondering if anyone has any ideas of places to stop off on the way to break the journey up? Not necessarily for a meal but somewhere to see and stretch our legs for a bit. I’d rather it wasn’t a motorway service station!

Lots of lovely places to stop in Northumberland. Alnwick, Bamburgh and Seahouses, Warkworth etc. Or just into Scotland, Eyemouth, Coldingham Bay, St Abbs. Or further north in Dunbar, Belhaven, North Berwick or South Queensferry.

Thanks. I was just reading about Seahouses which sounds lovely. Will research that a bit tonight after work. We’ve done South Queensferry to death. It’s just over the water.

Ah of course. Seahouses and Bamburgh are only a couple of miles apart so you could probably do both. Holy Island is another option but only if the tides timings work, you don't want to get stuck!

There’s quite a bit to do at Gretna Green - cafe, food hall, museum, playground, hedge maze, sculpture garden….
There’s also Kielder Waterside www.visitkielder.com/visit/kielder-waterside

It's a bit of a drag of a drive to go via Carlisle.
From York I prefer the A19 and through the Tyne tunnel route and then pick up the A1 at Cramlington then stop at Alnwick, Alnmouth, Warkworth, or Bamburgh castle.
Alternatively take the A1 route and you could stop in Durham or do some of the Hadrian's Wall sights near Hexham then head north on the A68.

We live in Fife and have spent a couple of weekends in the Seahouses/Bamburgh area.

We visited Cragside house and enjoyed it so much we went back the next time we were in the area. It's a lovely visit.
