Where to stay en route from Portmeirion to London

I’m spending a couple of days in Snowdonia over half term, and am looking to break the journey back to London for a night. We’ll be in Portmeirion for a morning and then driving back. It will be me and two DS (age 11 and 13). Ideally we’d end up coming back via Cardiff/M4 so we can visit family on the way home. But happy to explore other options.

Somewhere beautiful or interesting (I realise that’s pretty much all of Wales!), but any particular recommendations? It may be hard to find somewhere to stay, but if I can find a rough area then I can look for accommodation (we’re not very fussy). Thank you.

Somewhere in or around Cardiff - then you could visit St Fagan's the following morning before heading back to London. Should be interesting for all of you.

St Fagsns is great.

I’d also recommend the Big Pit museum.

There's no direct route from North to South Wales so you either have to do windy route through mid Wales or go across towards Birmingham & down M5. Cardiff it's really en route at all.

Thank you so much. St Fagan’s is a great idea - I haven’t been there since I was a kid. I don’t mind taking a longer route if it means we can go via Cardiff - I really want to take the boys to visit my grandparents graves and to see some of the places I used to go to as a child with them.

It's about 5 hours drive through mid Wales.

@converseandjeans 5 hours?! Thats so wrong.

I travel to Cardiff twice a month on the A487/A470 which is the direct route from north to south. Takes me 4 hours including a stop in Builth

MrsDThomas but it's not really a direct route is it if you're heading back to London. You need to take a 40 min detour to Cardiff. So instead of heading to Newport/M4 towards Bristol you go in a different direction.

4 hours from Portmeirion is good timing.
