Angelsey in the rain.

DH and I are off to Angelsey for a few days next week. Weather forecast is awful! Does anyone have any ideas of where to visit when the weather is a bit poor.
We are taking the car so are happy to drive about a bit. Is there anywhere that does lovely afternoon teas?

The Coffee Hut LLangefni - 4 Church Street is a good one, homemade food.
If you really want to push the boat out - £50 for afternoon tea - Chateau Rhianfa, not been there myself but know people who have.

StScholastica · 13/02/2022 10:12

Ahh thank you! I've looked at chateau rhianfa website but couldn't find the prices! That's probably why Grin is it £50 per couple? Or pp!!

Carpediem15 · 13/02/2022 10:40

It is £50 for 2 on here - afternoontea.co.uk/uk/wales/north-wales/chateau-rhianfa/
The usual price is £30

PaddleBoardingMomma · 13/02/2022 10:52

Just a heads up... charade rhianfa has been the talk of Anglesey lately because it had a terrible hygiene score

My parents live on the island and back in 2017 me and my dh stayed here for a few nights as a treat after DD was born, parents had her a few nights. It was glorious, couldn't fault it, but apparently it's really gone down hill, so disappointing.

If you're willing to travel, betws y coed is great in the rain because it makes the waterfall very impressive, and they have really lovely cafes and a pub. Probably about 45 mins if you go through the valley and a really impressive drive with high mountains either side. One of my fave places and I always go there when I'm visiting parents.

Beddgelert is also lovely, very small but lots of independent little shops and great cafes, also quite atmospheric in the rain and again a lovely drive to get there.

I lived on Anglesey for 10 years and have to say, there's not a lot on the island when the weather is bad, but then I was in my late teens / early 20s and suppose found it boring! During the summer it's a haven, beach parties and paddle boarding every weekend 🤣

PaddleBoardingMomma · 13/02/2022 10:53

Chateau! Autocorrect is on fire today

TottersBlankly · 13/02/2022 10:56

In normal times I’d suggest driving over to Galeri on Victoria Dock in Caernarfon - a relatively small scale contemporary arts venue on the waterside. I’ve seen some amazing theatre there, and it’s a great place for a casual meal, looking out to the boats. But there doesn’t seem to be any theatre happening there right now - though the cinema is operative and there are always exhibitions.

Don’t know how entertaining Caernarfon Castle would be in the rain.

Viviennemary · 13/02/2022 11:00

I wouldn't go ever. Got drenched on too holidsysnon stop downpours.

SkiingIsHeaven · 13/02/2022 11:04

Light a fire, read a book and just relax. You don't have to run around all of the time doing stuff.

powershowerforanhour · 13/02/2022 11:04

The Sea Zoo is good.

HilaryThorpe · 13/02/2022 11:04

Are Penrhyn Castle and Plas Newydd open?

Carpediem15 · 13/02/2022 11:22

If you get a decent day Llanberis is a great area to visit
Slate Museum
Electric Mountain
Mountain Railway etc.

Electric mountain tours have shut down! Sad
Portmeirion should be about an hour's drive and is well worth seeing even in the rain.

I find Portmeirion very creepy. :-)

Thanks everyone. We are in a hotel rather than a cottage so don't want to spend the whole time in our room. Thanks for the heads up re Chateau Rhisnfas hygiene rating. Hmm

I love Anglesey but in the rain it can be pretty miserable. There's a lovely cafe at Benllech with sea views, I think it's called the Bay View. Very good food.

countdowntonap · 13/02/2022 20:22

Where on the island are you based?

Perfectlystill · 13/02/2022 20:29

We did Anglesey in the rain and it wasn't great. But I loved Cemlyn Bay where there's a lagoon and a beach with seals that bark at sunset.

Also there's a not cheap shop at the Halen Mon salt place where you can buy nice foodie stuff.

TottersBlankly · 13/02/2022 20:33

Half my childhood (all the Summer holidays, anyway) seems to have been spent on Anglesey in the rain …

livelyliz · 13/02/2022 20:47

The Oyster Catcher by Rhosneigr is lovely for a coffee and relaxing read of the papers. You could take an umbrella and have a wander round Beaumaris, lots of interesting little shops and there is also an old gaol you can spend an hour and a courthouse that is really interesting. I absolutely love Anglesey and you can often get different weather there compared with mainland Wales.

Oh another lovely place to go is Red Wharf bay and two lovely places for lunch, the Ship inn a very old pub with log fire and excellent food, and the Boathouse for drinks and food, right on the sea front. I am jealous, would love to be there next week!

GalesThisMorning · 13/02/2022 20:51

Bring waterproofs and try and get out for a walk on the beach? Quick stomp on rhosneigr beach if there is a gap in the rain, then a meal at the oyster catcher?
South stack (holyhead) has amazing views with not much walking required. And a cafe.
Oriel mon in llangefni is a nice art gallery with a cafe, there is a really good pizza place next door too. Also in llangefni is the dingle which is a nice nature reserve and may be fairly sheltered from the rain.
Plas newydd is a national trust property with a stately home. Penrhyn castle is the same.
Halen mon has an exhibition space to show where they make salt, if you get desperate!
If you get off the island I agree that mountains are good in the rain, and betws y coed is beautiful.

Have fun, it looks bad this week but I'm sure you'll have a nice time anyway

The owner Jimmy and his wife Carys are so lovely! Everything cooked fresh and they are great hosts, can't believe I forgot to mention it!
Carpediem15 · 13/02/2022 22:42

If you like museums the Slate Museum is well worth a visit, we have been a couple of times.
I was surprised to hear about the Chateau as quite a few friends have had dinner and overnight stays there but this has happened to a couple of eateries near to where we live which made us locals gasp. (since gone back up to 5).
It is not going to rain all day and Thursday looking good. Enjoy what you can and often these forecasts are not right.

Redburnett · 13/02/2022 22:58

I have not been to Anglesey for some years but these are places we used to visit.

Check opening dates/times before you go as my recollection is that the holiday season only really starts at Easter.

Floofsquidge · 13/02/2022 23:10

If you cross the Menai to Caernarfon you can take a Welsh Highland Railway steam train from Caernarfon to Porthmadog. Beddgelert is a nice place to stop along the route for a cream tea or lunch and gift shops. One thing Gwynedd has is a lot of heritage railways which are nice ways to spend a rainy day in North Wales.
Mines (slate, gold, copper) are also a pretty safe bet for a rainy day in N Wales and surprisingly entertaining.

MenaiMna · 14/02/2022 00:07

Telford Centre in Menai bridge but limited winter opening - enthusiastic heritage of the bridges. Storiel local history museum in Bangor opposite the Cathedral.
