It will be our first summer holiday since DH died. I can’t drive. DC are 7 and 10. Please recommend places we can get to on the train from Midlands and can then get to accommodation/ beaches/ interesting places to go if not beach weather/ shops without a car.

Hi OP

I am a single parent with two DC who also doesn’t drive and have tried various holidays on my own with the kids.

I’d also agree the Isle of Wight is good and easy to get around. Brighton too - although I’ve only ever done long weekends there. The key I’ve found is being near somewhere that has lots you can very easily get to if the weather is rubbish. My best holidays in the U.K. have tended to be in cities as a result - but not so good for the summer!

I also went on my first all inclusive when I became single and would agree these are in lots of ways easier than a U.K. holiday. Kids love the pool, beach, weather and often make friends. If you can afford it there are some very good single parent holiday companies - when I first went abroad I went with them, it meant I had adults to talk to, there was back up of the ‘host’ and the kids easily made friends plus everything was sorted for me. The one so went on you really didn’t have to join in if you didn’t want to - but the groups always ended up good fun. This gave me the confidence as the kids got older to then do more trips on my own with them abroad.

Scarborough has a train station and is on the main TransPennine line between Liverpool and Newcastle so plenty of places you can join the line from the Midlands

Aberystwyth is a direct train line from Birmingham. The Lincolnshire coast is also accessible by train via Leicester.
