Lovely, thoughtful 19yr old son bought tickets for Cinderella at the end of May for him & me as my Christmas present.
We've decided to go for 2 nights- Fri/Sat and will be travelling by train.
Looking for budget accommodation recommendations- Premier inn level but no idea which are nearest or how far out we can go and still get Tubes etc
We'll do museums and the river in the daytime.
Food will be no problem- both veggie and happy to do room picnics
thanks for any ideas

There's a thread discussing the Premier Inns at County Hall (south bank of the Thames) and the one near Kings Cross/St Pancras:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/uk/4465813-Premier-Inn-London-Kings-Cross-or-County-Hall

There's actually a Travelodge at the top end of Drury lane but personally I'm not a fan of Travelodge.

Which train station are you coming in to?

Flyingflamingoes · 09/02/2022 12:05

@Plexie we'll be coming into Kings Cross so that thread is really helpful- thank you.

I'm not a Travelodge fan either Grin

We love Premier Inn. I've stayed at St Pancras several times (it's much nicer than Euston) but apparently County Hall is the best if you can get out before they sell out.

Kensington Earls Court Premier is also convenient for the tube and the museums (But be aware the tube line runs right behind).

There's a map on the Premier Inn website:

Don't pick a Hub by mistake - the rooms are a lot smaller, which is fine for 1 person but I assume you're sharing with your son?

I see there's one in Leicester Square but I've never noticed people asking about it on MN, it's usually the one at County Hall.

I don't know what the prices are like so if cost is a big factor you may want to choose one further from the centre and travel in.

Eco Pizza in Drury Lane do fabulous veggie pizzas and are very reasonable.

AuntieMarys · 09/02/2022 12:49

Kings Cross premier inn is excellent.

I believe the hubs ONLY have double rooms, not twin.

I see there's one in Leicester Square but I've never noticed people asking about it on MN, it's usually the one at County Hall.

I think the main reason is that Leicester Square is usually twice the price On a random date in March County Hall is £105 and Leicester Square is £206

There's plenty of branches, some are better than others but availability may not be great by now as things are getting busier. Just avoid the independent ones around Russell Square unless you get a personal recommendation because I've had 2 bad experiences from that area, think 70's decor and moth balls

Flyingflamingoes · 10/02/2022 18:11

Thanks all for you replies, and the cautions about Hubs & Russell square.
Definitely not sharing a double with him, much as I love him!
Looks like Premier inn is probably the right choice for us.
@BigSandyBalls2015 thanks for the pizza recommendations too.

Possibly too late for you now, but we're heading up to town at half term and I found that many of the non budget hotels were cheaper/not much more than than the budget chains (especially if you also have Quidco cash back offers as well).

Flyingflamingoes · 12/02/2022 22:37

@madcats not too late- we're not going until late May, I'm doing my research early Smile
Good to know re offers too

Hi all,
we went for PI Old Street in the end- really accessible from Kings X and a good point for all we did. Fantastic weekend- we got last minute tickets for Les Mis on the Friday night from the TKTS booth in Leicester square. I think we only ended up spending on snack/street food as we went around, and contactless travel with TFL, the Uber boat and the cable cars (a never again experience!).
We walked 24000+ steps for each of the 3 days we were there and saw all of the iconic landmarks thanks to downloaded walking guides from TfL.
I used to party in London in the early 90's but have always shied away from being a tourist- got to say now that there will be many more weekends like this, so much still to do that is free before we even get onto the paid attractions.
Thank you to everyone who made suggestions
