Manchester airport to train - 25mins too fine ?

I arrive at Manchester airport at 5pm and there’s an express train at 5:25 to take me to my next stop ( a conference ) near Carlisle. I have to be registered that evening at the conference and the train at 5:25 takes 90 minutes but the later trains take 150minutes, quite slow and arrival will
Be late.

Is it viable to get the 5:25 train ? Or should I not even dream of it ?

I won’t have check in luggage - obviously. Just walk on. I have Never been to Manchester airport or the train stsrtion and really worried

I don't think that will work. You've got disembarkation, getting through the airport, security if international flight, then to the train station, which is a 10-15 walk according to Google.

Comefromaway · 01/02/2022 11:04

You would be relying on the plane touching down at exactly the right time with no delays and you actually being allowed off the plane on time and through customs/security etc.

SausageRoll2020 · 01/02/2022 11:17

It's doable. But if your plane is delayed...
Also depends on which terminal you fly into? I can't remember which one the station is nearest to but it's super close to one and a fair walk from the other.

Can you let the conference organisers know you might be a little late due to travel times?

Hbh17 · 01/02/2022 11:50

I would say that this is not remotely feasible, for all the reasons already mentioned. The station is closer to terminals 1 & 3 than it is to terminal 2, but still a few minutes' walk.

Kitkat151 · 01/02/2022 12:08

You will only miss it by about 10to 15 minutes...but no not doable

YupNameChangeAgain · 01/02/2022 21:54

Thanks all
I didn’t know about the different terminals and walking distances
It is a flight from Southampton - so no passport / security / customs but of course - there is no contingency here

Alternative plans being investigated
Thanks again

Is there extra contingency time in the flight schedule? Have a look what time that flight normally lands at. Still taking a risk though.

Could you fly to Glasgow?

notanaturalmum · 01/02/2022 23:21

I did it once. I think I had about 30 minutes after landing.
But I ran. And I mean full pelt all the way from border control.
Along that glass walkway tunnel thing. It's a solid 10/15 minute walk.
If I had missed my train then I would have had to get a taxi home (80 miles)
I made the train but spent a good twenty minutes hyperventilating in my seat. And I didn't have any water and there was no trolley service.
Personally I don't think it's doable and I wouldn't do it again.
I'm presuming you have never been to the airport before.

emmathedilemma · 02/02/2022 16:27

I think it's too tight. Note that if you book your train ticket direct with Transpennine Express and go for the cheapest advance ticket then these are valid on the next available service if your flight is cancelled / delayed. (normally they're only valid on the booked train but this is an exception for airport passengers). BUT you still need to allow enough time to catch the train and I think 25min, even off a domestic flight with hand luggage is probably cutting it too fine.
