York

I am looking for help with York. I have 3 nights booked for us in an Airbnb place just at the city walls. With parking. We will do the Shambles, walk the Wall, the Minster and the Viking centre but what else is good for a 14 year old boy?

Also decent places to eat would be good too if you know them. Definitely going to Betty’s.

@RampantIvy

Betty's is overrated! There are nicer cafes.

We have a place in the "grim up north" unfashionable nearest town to me that does sensational afternoon teas, and it knocks spots off Betty's.

Ooh intrigued. I love an afternoon tea. Do you mind giving a clue as to where you are talking about?

The Railway Museum is wonderful. Try the fish & chips from one of the city centre chippies, a real traditional taste.
I agree about Betty's being over rated.

I love Betty's and its very good value, however, the Railways Museum has a 1930s train carriage which does an lovely afternoon tea www.railwaymuseum.org.uk/visit/countess-york

Another vote for Lucia if you like Italian or Ambiente for tapas. We also often visit the street food stalls on the Shambles market, if you’re there on a weekend there’s often a lady selling amazing cakes on the market too.

Went to Ambiente for lunch today it was great. They're really into sherry. Dh had a flight of sherries with our tapas.
The Mended drum is an excellent pub that has fab food. It's in Huby a few miles out of York.

RampantIvy · 26/01/2022 22:33

It sounds like DH and I need to book an overnight stay in York. I love the sound of Ambiente.

Mad Alice’s ghost tour is excellent. Not usually my thing at all, but loved it.
She was also really accommodating. I had to cut our trip short, and she managed to squeeze us in at short notice the day before.

Ghost Walk Crypt beneath York Minster is more interesting than you might think Definitely go to Jorvik Railway Museum is atmospheric, even if not that into trains Evil Eye used to do brilliant Thai food- not sure if they still do (or allow minors) but worth checking

Is he thinking about universities yet (I was at 14, but I was desperate to leave home… your DS may not be so eager Grin)? York is a BRILLIANT university; I went and have never met anyone who didn’t love their time there… never too soon to plant a seed by taking him for a quick walk round the campus…

I went to Uni in York (not York Uni as that is not in town) but St John's - fab place to be a student .... I think 1990-4 were a bit of a hazy blur!

Leaving home? I can’t get him to leave his bedroom!

Went here yesterday. Excellent flying displays and lots of opportunities to handle the birds. Staff are mainly volunteers. Birds are very well kept. I've been to a few bird of prey centres and this was the best.

Can anyone make any good afternoon tea places other than Betty’s? Might be heading to York next month! Smile

Oakdog · 30/01/2022 09:51

The Grand and The Principal both supposedly both have lovely afternoon teas. I've not had either, but bought vouchers as gifts to both, which were really enjoyed by the recipients.

Gray's Court, behind the Minster, does a good afternoon tea, or at least they used to.
