Holiday from North West - near good National Trust Properties?

Looking at getting away in the summer and we tend to like a chilled out week relaxing at our holiday cottage and popping out and about, especially free days out to a handful of National Trust properties!

We've previously had great breaks exploring North Norfolk and North Yorkshire.

Can anyone suggest other UK areas to explore? So far I have North Wales and Northumberland on my list but have been to neither. North Wales seems a no brainer given we are near Manchester, but don't know where to start looking. Any accommodation companies most appreciated too.

When we were NT members, we had a good stay at Church Farm Cottages near Bath. There’s a list of reachable NT properties on their website.

The New Forest would take you (approx half an hour in each direction) to Corfe Castle, the beaches of Studland, and Mottisfont - and lots of other none Nt stuff nearby too. The Vyne isn’t so far away either.

There are a lot of national trust properties in the south west. Though don’t know how far you’re willing to travel.

Does it have to have North in the area name? Grin

Some fabulous national trust properties in east/south devon:
Killerton, Knightshayes, coleton fishacre, castle drogo and greenway.

Warwickshire is a nice area too and has lots of NT places to visit.

Devon & Kent both have lots of great NT properties.

The Midlands has some good ones. Hardwick Hall, Kedleston, Newstead, Clumber Park, Sudbury Hall (which has the excellent National Trust Museum of Childhood).

OP, admittedly we booked a couple of months ago, but have you thought about staying in an NT cottage?

We tend to spend a day or two getting to our destination, building in some NT stops to stretch our legs, grab lunch and see something new.

Warwickshire.

Coughton Court (my fave in summer, the gardens are beautiful)
Baddesley Clinton (moated house)
Packwood House (interesting, but the cafe gets ridiculously busy as Solihull and Warwick families empty into it at weekends)
Upton House (fantastic art collection because the NT isn't allowed to to remove it from the property, so can't distribute it to busier sites)

North Wales is fantastic but dont dismiss some of the surrounding areas, Shropshires a hidden gem, Liverpool, Chester all have plenty to see and do and quite close together
Some ideas here

Liverpool has some nice NT places

Northumberland
South West Wales

Shropshire. Lots of good days out, I particularly likes Powis Castle.

We did Northumberland last year and did 4 national trust places in the week - fountains abbey on the journey there, cragside, wallington and lindesfarne castle. We’d 100% go back to cragside and Wallington again and love fountains abbey anyway.
There did seem to be lots of other places around too.

RuthTopp · 30/01/2022 17:45

If Northumberland is a place of choice , and you are looking at NT places , Cragside is a must.
Also Kilder Forest is huge and worth a visit.
