What do you want to do? Go walking? Other outdoor activity? Potter round shops? Go to nice restaurants? Do you want a big hotel or small B&B? Self-catering?

The largest towns in the National Park are Windermere/Bowness. Ambleside and Keswick.

Yeah only 1 night so small walk nice food, maybe a boat ride or sight see, somewhere clean that does a decent breakfast.

Ambleside or Keswick.
Yes, they are the busier and more touristy places but they are charming and have some lovely places to eat.

lakeswimmer · 11/01/2022 22:58

I agree that Ambleside or Keswick would fit the bill. At either you can do a boat trip, walk up a big hill or do something less strenuous, potter round the shops and there are plenty of places to eat.

Hawkshead

Rainallnight · 11/01/2022 23:03

Keswick

CovidCorvid · 11/01/2022 23:05

Keswick

Savingpeoplehuntingthings · 11/01/2022 23:05

Keswick if you want a small town or Grasmere if you want quiet. Hawkshead is nice too.

Peakypolly · 11/01/2022 23:15

Ambleside - upmarket The Samling, 10 minute walk to the ferry, or The Ambleside Inn has just been refurbed in the centre of the village. Amazing food all over, a particular mention for Kysty, veggie grub in Zepherellis or a fabulous Thai in Doi Intanon. The Copper Pot is a great breakfast spot, but once again, loads of choice.

WildStallyn · 11/01/2022 23:43

Keswick, without a doubt. A nicer town centre than Ambleside imo, it's pedestrianised for a start, and the views over Derwent Water are stunning. You can do fantastic walks straight from the town - Castlerigg, Catbells, Latrigg - and loads of good pubs and restaurants too.

DartmoorChef · 11/01/2022 23:49

Grasmere is lovely too. The wordsworth Hotel is great. The langdale Hotel and Spa in the langdale valley is also fabulous and is a great central location for access to Grasmere, Hawkshead, Ambleside, windermere, Coniston.

@savingpeoplehuntingthings
Thats the best ideal places depending on what you want, we like Keswick as its busier and the Brysons breakfast
This is a good way to see Hawkshead

Depending on your budget I would recommend here - www.lakedistricthotels.net/lodorefalls/spa

The West side of the lakes is lovely if you want to be somewhere quieter - over near Scafell is nice with some great views and walks

Sosigsandwich · 15/01/2022 09:50

Could anyone recommend somewhere to park for the day in Keswick?

Crocky · 15/01/2022 09:54

@Sosigsandwich
Keswick Rugby Club

drspouse · 15/01/2022 09:56

I would say Coniston as the Gondola is the loveliest boat ride.

If you're going after mid February I'd park at Nichol End just through Portinscale and get the launch over to Keswick, lovely trip on the lake, free parking and you could walk back to the car

@Savingpeoplehuntingthings Not going till Oct so a great option thank you!
