We live in Scotland and are going to postpone our long awaited trip to Canada in April. We have a week off together and don’t want to spend it in the house. We’ve promised DS who is 13, nearly 14 by then a trip to Alton Towers. I know England is a big place but if we travelled straight to Alton Towers and had a couple of nights there, where would you suggest that’s good for another few days back to Edinburgh. We are open to all suggestions as long as it has something to keep a teenage boy occupied. We are done with country and beach walks I’m afraid due to lockdown. I like the look of York but wonder if there are any other suggestions.

York if he’s into history, Manchester if he’s into sport. In Manchester there’s the national football museum and various stadium tours, Chill Factore and Inflatanation.

Thank you. I hadn’t thought about Manchester but will definitely look.

Manchester would be less of a detour from your route and there’s plenty to do for a few days.

Depends if you go M6 or A1. What is your son into? if you went back on the A1 you could visit Northumberland (might not be a teenager's thing, although cycling over the causeway to Holy Island is pretty cool), go mountain biking/Go Ape in Hamsterley Forest? Or go to Newcastle?

or there's mountain biking in Whinlatter near Keswick if you went back on the west side.

York is better done by train from Edinburgh if you just want a couple of days in the city, it's as bad as edinburgh for parking and the train is much quicker.
