Summer holiday somewhere in England

dH v cautious about booking abroad this year.

We live in NE England. We live Scotland are going to Mull at Easter and the spey in May.

In summer we would like to explore a part of England we haven't done before. Other regions we have enjoyed are

The Lakes
North York Moors
Yorkshire Dales
Cornwall
Dorset
Wiltshire area eg Stonehenge, longleat etc
Cotswolds
Northumberland

I'm interested maybe in Oxford- I'd like to take dcs to pitt Rivers museum/Bletchley Park but thinking maybe a 2 week multi-destination trip with a combo of self catering hotels (this is what we did in Scotland this summer as an example - 1 week self catering in a fishing lodge, 5 days in a wildlife field centre and then couple of nights in premier inn in Inverness)

This year we did a week at Kelling Heath in North Norfolk (seal watching at Blakeney, Sheringham beach, steam railway, Cromer) and then a week at Waveney River Centre. It was a lovely holiday and the dc really enjoyed themselves.

pannikin · 28/12/2021 15:21

Would you consider Wales? We had a fab holiday with DS (7) in Anglesey this summer.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 28/12/2021 15:32

We stayed on the edge of exmoor last summer on the Somerset coast. Sea, Kayaking, fossils lots of national trust places, good walking. Not as busy as other South West Coastal areas.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 28/12/2021 15:34

Last summer for covid summer number 1 we went to Yorkshire, just a couple of hours drive from home. Quite busy as we stayed in Yorkshire 3 peaks area but we had a nice time.

ontana · 28/12/2021 16:52

Somerset sounds good and I love the sound of Norfolk. We have 2 ds aged 11 and 8 so pretty active

What about the Peak District/Sherwood Forest that sort of area, and then a bit of time near Oxford

Driposaurus · 28/12/2021 16:55

Or: come to Hampshire for the New Forest - easy to do a few days in Oxford or just a day trip.

Stillgoings · 29/12/2021 09:22

We went to Norfolk this summer and absolutely loved it. Would think your DS are an excellent age for a bit of boating on the broads, that would be a good two centre holiday, boating and Norfolk.coast.

DaisyMum40 · 29/12/2021 20:11

We had a great summer holiday in the New Forest area this year, beautiful part of the country, lots to do for our kids and we'd definitely go back.

profpoopsnagle · 30/12/2021 09:40

What about London for a few days?

Agree with the Oxford area being a good base. Lots of sights in Oxford, plus punting etc, Bletchley park, Blenheim palace, Warwick castle, Stratford, Coventry all within fairly good reach as well as the Cotswolds.

I would also look at a base in the Mendip Hills. There is Bristol, Bath, Glastonbury, Wookey Hole but also the coast- Clevedon and Weston. Perhaps add on a few days in Cardiff and see St Fagans and the Royal mint?

The peak district is also a good shout, though perhaps there is less in terms of museums/attractions and more in walking/activities.

Crowdfundingforcake · 30/12/2021 09:46

Suffolk or Norfolk - can be a bucket and spade holiday, but there's loads of stuff to do - Norfolk Broads, Minsmere, visit a windmill, crabbing, Framlingham Castle, miniature railways, wildlife parks.

Funf · 08/01/2022 19:21

North Wales is fantastic, loads to see and do for all ages, its quite compact too so once you arrive nothing is too far away.

Lots of nice places on the way too, Liverpool and Chester are well worth a visit.

Peak District if you like walking, cycling, hills etc. Canals too. Plague museum at Eyam is very topical!

ElephantInPrint · 09/01/2022 21:26

North Norfolk. Stay west of Cromer. Went last Summer and I was completely shocked by it (in a good way)

I'm NW England and I felt like it was somewhere no one knew about (where I live anyway!)

ontana · 11/01/2022 16:53

Thanks for everyone's ideas. What about week in Norfolk with some time in Norwich/Cambridge as short "city" breaks?? Like one or two nights in each?

eagerlywaitingfor · 11/01/2022 17:03

You could combine a few days on the north Norfolk coast with a boat holiday on the Broads, with a day or two in Norwich to finish off.

I've never liked Cambridge much to be honest.

hopeishere · 11/01/2022 17:12

Northern Ireland? Loads to see and do. All very compact.

ontana · 11/01/2022 18:30

@hopeishere great suggestion, we did have a short break there a few years ago, did Belfast, titanic etc, giants causeway, carrick a rede, Ballycastle
