Devon/Cornwall for beginners??

Thinking of booking for Devon or Cornwall this summer, as we've never been, but am not sure where to start. We are city dwellers, and although I obviously get that rural communities have different resources, we would prefer to be somewhere where there is a small supermarket, and a choice of restaurants or takeaways that don't get booked up ridiculously far in advance. The DC will be 15 and 11. We are not at all sporty, but like a decent hike. Both kids swim very well and have mentioned wanting to try surfing. We also like historical sites. We'll have a car.

I have been eyeing up St Ives and wondered if anyone has any thoughts?

Stay somewhere like Penzance and then day trip to St Ives. You can visit places like Lands End, Minack, Mousehole

St ives is nice but super busy. Even before the pandemic and term time it was mobbed when we were there.

Falmouth is good. Nice beach. Loads of restaurants

N devon woolacombe or ilfraxombe

We did Cornwall last year for the same reason you did this year. We took a caravan and had a site by the beach (in fact in it).

We were lucky as the beach was spacious and only had people from the site and a few from down the road. As soon as we ventured out the place was utterly rammed solid. We went to Fowey.....trying to park was like the wacky races in the car park (took and hour).

Eating out was pretty hopeless due to extreme staffing difficulties. Covid had some impact with pingdemic, but reality was staff had all gone home and not come back. Lunch out was possible but evening meals were hopeless with rubbish menus of you actually got a table.

We have booked abroad this year and sold it if it doesn't come off, but we would rather stay at home than experience that again....we, and several others staying around us all came home early we were that sick of it. Weather want great either which doesn't help
