I may have a couple of unexpected days off work in February / March. Has anyone got a good suggestions of a uk city for couple of nights. Would just be me no children or others! I have been to york, edinburgh, Oxford, bath. I'm not an art gallery type person. Not London / Brighton either as live near there and am there all the time!

Maybe somewhere with a theatre showing something you'd like to see?

VeronicaBeccabunga · 21/12/2021 12:35

Our most recent city break was in Bristol, which we greatly enjoyed.
I loved Manchester, Liverpool is interesting too and Birmingham is OK.

If not galleries/museums what sort of things do you enjoy?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/12/2021 12:36

Yes to Liverpool or Bristol. Not Birmingham, unless you want to visit a particular restaurant (we have some excellent ones!).

SingingSands · 21/12/2021 12:37

Liverpool is great, loads to see and do.

I'm not against museums but I prefer more modern history / family life type ones if that make sense. So in bath I went to Royal crescent and liked the castle museum in york with the streets at the bottom.

Like wandering around taking stuff in as much as anything.

Bristol was in my possibles list, also had heard Liverpool mentioned. I had thought about Belfast - would need to check travel rules though?

Newcastle is great. Metro links to the coast and the Metrocentre for shopping, plus the city centre is lovely for a wander especially down the Quayside. Also it's only a 15 minute direct train ride from Durham which is worth a day trip.

I loved Belfast, so much recent history that's relevant to our lifetime.

MinnieMountain · 22/12/2021 13:44

Bradford-on-Avon. I went with a friend but I think it would be nice alone.

WaltzingBetty · 22/12/2021 15:59

Its a great compact city, loads going on but quiet places too, loads of great pubs and restaurants something for everyone really, great Parks, Beaches all easily accessible

York is a beauuuuuutiful, historic city with museums and beautiful old buildings.

Glasgow or Manchester are both a nice size to comfortably get around.

Glasgow - Abode hotel was the home of Ramsay McDonald, the first Scottish man to become prime minister in the 1920’s and it’s central/lovely to boot.
Kelvingrove has a great history of Glasgow section.
Lots of lovely welcoming restaurants to enjoy from The Crab Shak for delicious seafood to Peasano for cheap and cheerful pizza.
Good shopping, great architecture, parks, Botanics, theatres, gigs… what’s not to love?!

Manchester has a plethora of hidden gems and a great vibe.
Cathedral cafe does The Best bacon roll ever!
I love the architecture and could wander all day.
The Richmond Tearooms for Clementine cake, Yard and Coop for filthy chicken burgers and The refuge to eat, sip a good drink and watch the world go by.
Cinema at the print works central if you fancy that.

Not a city but Shrewsbury would be a lovely trip. Lots of history, lovely walks, great independent shops and many good places to eat and drink.

EBearhug · 08/01/2022 23:39

I went to Belfast last September on my in, and I loved it, really interesting. Liverpool is good too.

CoCoaButter85 · 04/11/2023 12:02

Decision made! Will go to Glasgow and will spend one day in Edinburgh as well. Would St Andrews be doable? I know it's smaller but looks lovely looking at the photos.

Also what would you recommend to bring home? My husband is from Edinburgh so some well thought present would be appreciated. (We got married in Scotland and still have a nice / full sugar Irn Bru bottle unopened :)))

I have never come up York before. Will have a better look. Both our birthday are in Dec/Jan so we thought a little break away instead of a present might be nice treat x

CoCoaButter85 · 04/11/2023 12:03

I would like to visit Belfast. I think it would be very interesting. Something for next year

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 04/11/2023 12:09

I'd go to bath abs have a spa

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 06/11/2023 04:36

Norwich is lovely for wandering around. Plenty of interesting bits to see.

Catopia · 18/11/2023 18:55

Liverpool is fun. Durham or Cambridge if you want to more mooch round visiting nice coffee shops and things. You will hopefully be hitting the first of the spring flowers, so could think about somewhere with national trust properties with nice gardens or something.
