National Trust membership

We are thinking about getting an annual family membership for the national trust. Does anyone else have one and if yes is it worth it?

Thank you in advance x

You used to be able to join the Scottish National Trust, whose passes were cheaper. That still allowed you free access into all NT properties.

I'm not sure what the price saving is anymore - but thought I'd mention.

Mine probably hasn't been worth it this year but I see the membership as a charitable donation as I think the National Trust do a lot of important work.

We go for a lot of walks. I've got single adult membership but I only use it for parking.

Wait4nothing · 04/08/2022 16:46

It definitely depends on where you live. We live within 10 mins drive of a lovely NT place and can reach about 6 others within 1 hours drive. We use our local one twice a month and then do another around once a month. Whenever we have weekends away in the uk or visit family who live further away we consider using our membership too - either for a day out or to break up a journey.

Depends on how much you are likely to use it.

Would you want to just use the grounds, or see a lot of stately homes?

If you want to go for a walk, you may be able to get away with a single membership. Look at the small print.

We got it when we had a dog and DD had choir practice near a famous property, so we went there every two weeks. I've conveniently snuck children into use the toilets on school trips. It's worth taking your card with you on holiday in case there is something nearby. We had a love hour in the Georgian House in Edinburgh, for example.

Well worth it here. Local place is the perfect place for picnics and running around safely without dogs.

lots of choice when we go on holidays or just fancy a big day out somewhere.

and as a pp mentioned, we often look for one halfway on a longer drive and use the tearoom and grounds rather than a motorway service station.

handy for parking at a couple of local walks too. And I think the conservation work they do is important, so happy to support them.

We love ours and use them regularly as we live within walking distance of a popular north east one as also holiday in the UK regularly.

You can also use it in some places abroad and vice versa. We have the Italian equivalent and can get in free to NT properties. Doesn't include parking unfortunately!

Yes, we think it's just about worthwhile in the South West. If you live near lots of NT properties then it may be really worthwhile.

Sprogonthetyne · 04/08/2022 18:01

Very dependent on where you live. Look on there website and she what's in your area. We had one for a year, but used it for less then we hope as there were only 3 within day trip distance of us, and one of those was further then I'd like. When we went it was lovely, but once we'd done each a couple of times it lost it's appeal.

EternalPoinsettia · 04/08/2022 18:04

We don't have that many near us, but can day trip to a few under an hour. We use it every time we travel in UK either day trips from location or stop offs. It's always felt worth it to us as we love visiting the properties both before we were parents and now with dc. Our family and many friends do too so we can use alongside others too

I view it as a charity donation really and certainly haven't got my money's worth since the pandemic.

But what I do like is that once paid for, it's essentially a free day out - you can pop into these places without thinking it's a big investment of cash / will I or won't I get my money's worth from this day ticket? Just go, have a quick look and see what you think. Stay longer if it's good.
