Looking at booking a 3 night stay in the new forest/Hampshire for August 2022 because the kids are now at school we have to go away in the holidays. We haven't been able to afford to go away since they were born so totally out of the loop with how much things cost. The cheapest i can find for a basic caravan is £800 all the way up to £1750 for 3 nights! - i know it's all more expensive once you have kids but ... That's really a lot! Is this standard?

sadly yes! I think prices went up last year as fewer people were travelling abroad and owners cashed in on the additional demand. I paid £375 for mon - fri in a caravan the August bank holiday Monday week last year but I think that was a bit of a bargain compared to other places I looked at! Also, a lot of places don't want short stays in peak season so you sometimes pay the 7night rate to only stay 3 or 4.

Prices have shot right up;I looked at a break for the same week in the same accommodation that I had last October for next October and it's over double what I paid last year

It was £675 last October now £1470 for next.

Wow that's high. Sometimes shorter breaks cost a lot more per night than if you're able to go for a week. Have you looked on VRBO, I rent a lot through there and often they have good cancellation terms ( in case there are still covid issues come the summer)

Prices have gone but I haven't paid anything like that. There will likely be January sales. I find choosing dates and seeing where is available works out cheaper than having a specific place in mind. I see what is good value for my dates, shortlist based on our criteria (e.g. facilities, number of bedrooms) and book that way. Last summer holidays I paid £470 for a week in a high quality cottage with a sea view and £220 for 3 nights in a caravan. Next May half term we have a cottage for a week in a popular seaside resort for £545. They are all in Scotland so likely to be cheaper than the south though. Airbnb is great, I often book through there. I tend to avoid the branded travel companies and use small independents too.
