60th birthday - UK break recommendations (January)

Hi all,

It's my Dad's 60th birthday in the first week of January and we've had to postpone the holiday abroad that we had booked. So I'm looking for ideas of where we can go in the UK for 2/3 nights that would keep three adults, two young adults, and a four year old happy? Possibly a city break that has things to do that the whole family can enjoy with good restaurants/bars for the evening?

London looks far too expensive but open to other suggestions? We are in the Midlands so can get to most places in the country quite easily.

Thanks in advance!

York? My DF was in his element at the National Railway Museum and there’s lots to keep your 4yo amused. DF also especially enjoyed Jorvik and York Castle Museum. My elder Dc enjoyed a ghost tour, climbing the Minster, chocolate story, the dungeon and shopping in the Shambles. There’s something for everyone.

Must you go that week? It would be fine for a cottage by the sea type of holiday, but in a city things will be dead then. Restaurants closed, galleries with nothing special on, even if they’re open. It’s down time for major venues. The only lively places may be shops with sales on.

However … At a better time of year Edinburgh or Cork would be great for your purposes. The first without a car, (everything is central and easy to get to) the second definitely with so you can spend your time exploring the West Coast as well as enjoying the city.

Thanks all for your replies!

It definitely has to be that week as he wants us all to be together for his actual birthday. I’m trying to convince him to go for coastal cottage or perhaps even Centre Parcs-type break for the reasons you’ve all said!

In that case it had better be a city by the sea! The landscape won’t be closed even if the restaurants are.
