Things to do around Aberfeldy, Scotland

I just booked a week in a house very close to Aberfeldy for next summer. I have 2 teen boys and my DH. We are all quite sporty and active. We love great food, culture, history, sports shopping and nature.

The last time we went to Scotland we did the West Coast and then stayed near Aberfeldy for a night on the way back. It was too beautiful to do in a day so we deliberately didn't run around like headless chickens and just booked it for next summer to explore. This time we would like to explore north of Aberfeldy and perhaps east.

Any recommendations for that area based on our interests?

Thanks.

I really enjoyed my visit to the Highland Chocolatier when I was up that way.

Would you climb Schiehallion?

PickupaPenguin8 · 16/11/2021 10:21

Climb Ben Vrackie in Pitlochry. Lots of walks around Pitlochry actually.
White water rafting in Aberfeldy.
In Aberfeldy itself there are Safari tours taking you into the hills to see wildlife and have various adventures.
The usual distillery tours

The Birks of Aberfeldy

Loads to do. One of my favourite areas

Inn on the Tay does good food and lovely to sit on the deck outside

Pitlochry Theatre for culture.

House of Bruar for shopping.

It now has a cinema which shows a wide range of things so it's worth checking. Drive up glen lying is nice.

Its also with easy reach of Edinburgh either driving the whole way or drive to Dunkeld and get a train. About 2 hours each way and a spectacular trip.

I would second the idea of climbing one of the mountains. I'd also take bikes and explore the route 7 cycle network. In one direction you could go to pitlochry and in the other you could explore loch tay.

Wow, quick responses. Thanks everyone.

We went to Scotland last summer. It is the first time I have been there as an adult and can't remember it from when I was a child. I have to say that I was totally blown away by it. It is stunningly beautiful.

We did a couple of things whilst there including WWRon the River Tay. I think next time we will try one of their other adventures such as canyoning. We climbed Ben Nevis so very happy to do some hiking on other mountains.

I spent 10 mins in House of Bruar as we were heading home and I'll definitely be back there Wink

Yes the cinema is great. Also several lovely cafes . I think one was called the Lemon Tree or something like that.

The outdoor hotbox Sauna at Taymouth Marina. I think there are watersports there too.

Yes it’s lovely. I’ve been there.

See if there's anything on at Pitlochry festival theatre, they have some great stuff. Loch Tay has some attractions including wild water swimming and windsurfing and Killiecrankie is good for walking.

I'm from Perth so I'm not recommending it (lol🤣) I left for a reason!

Day out in Edinburgh or Glasgow do-able. If you're not familiar with Scotland Edinburgh will give you more of a flavour though the castle is a rip off, Stirling Castle much better value.

There is a lovely, quiet bike ride up the longest, lonliest and loveliest glen in Scotland - Glen Lyon. Park at Fortingall (oldest living thing on earth in the churchyard there) and cycle up gently uphill to Bridge of Balgie. Coffee shop there sells great home made scones and coffee. Ride back a (mostly) downhill ride. You can go further - just U-turn when you have had enough. Very very few cars.

The falls of Acharn are stunning - a surprise in the cave and the bridge crossing await you. Thank me later, this is better than the Birks in Aberfeldy IMO.

Hillwalks - Schehallion is good, but can get very busy and quite a pull if you are not used to it. The view is stunning though.
An alternative is Ben Lawers or Tarmachan - the carpark is halfway up the hills ;-) Do remember we are due first snows this week, and it could be full on winter weather at the top (last time up Tarmachan for me it was -18...)

Loch Rannoch is relatively near - and the road up and over is amazing if you are not used to Scotland, a loop of the loch has a lot of places to stop and explore, including my favourite place in Scotland - the Black Woods of Rannoch.

The Queen’s View at Loch Tummel is nearby and worth a visit.

MrsAmaretto · 14/12/2021 21:37

Killin is one of my favourite places to visit - that end of the loch is much quieter. Great for kayaking, some nice shortish walks round the forests, up hills etc, falls of dochart and morlanich house. Also up to Crainlarich and tyndrum. Stunning part of the country.
