Staying near Birmingham for Commonwealth Games

We've booked a 10am session for the Commonwealth Games next August and need somewhere to stay the night before. An idle look at Booking.com was alarming in terms of prices. Can anyone please suggest anywhere within about 30-45 mins by direct train?

Coventry is 20 minute by train to New Street, and then local service out

coronafiona · 15/11/2021 22:42

Stafford, Wolverhampton decent prices and half an hr from new street

Which venue? There's a big distance between the locations for (eg) athletics, swimmimg, gymnastics, bowls...

Following with interest. We have a local independent hotel booked on free cancellation which looks "interesting" but wondering about being further out.

littlequestion · 15/11/2021 23:25

It's for the athletics.

If you're planning to drive there, I'd stay somewhere north of B'ham - it's quite a long way out of town. Sutton Coldfield could be an option, or Walsall/ West Brom. None of these are tourist or business hubs though, so don't know what their hotel stock is like.

If you're planning to use public transport, plan carefully... it's a 30 min bus journey from the city centre. As some said earlier, Coventry is 20 mins away, but by the time you've factored in getting to the station, and time to change between train and bus, you're looking at 70-90 mins travel. Driving from Cov would probably be close to an hour.

If time isn't an issue, then you can be in the centre of Birmingham from places like Solihull and Leamington within 45 mins. Or plenty of places to the west of town will have train links. But if your 30-45 mins journey time is to the stadium then these won't work.

Try the small hotels/guest houses in south Birmingham. Bournville has 2. Edgbaston has loads and loads of hotels.

Have you tried the Holiday Inn in Great Barr ?
A bus goes straight from there to Perry Barr where the stadium is.

I think there is a Premier Inn close the Holiday Inn too.

Oldraver · 16/11/2021 08:00

Oh if it's Perry Bar then there is a fab hotel that had a kitchen and separate bedroom next door

I would imagine it could be booked up by now

Have just found Silver Swans on YouTube - sorry don't know how to link. Seems to be ballet for over 55s but looks appropriate for any age to help posture. Am going to have go.

Sorry wrong thread !

Following with interest - we have tickets for the athletics and diving. I was originally thinking if staying in Northampton as we have friends there but getting to the North of Birmingham from there is not a good option.
