Somewhere like Aldeburgh or Southwold?

Can anyone give me some suggestions of places to stay for a week in the winter in southern England for a week as a couple with a dog.

We like Aldeburgh and Southwold, so something with that sort of feel would be great.

Sidmouth in Devon is nice.

Whitstable, Hastings or Cromer

Whitby?

Lyme Regis
Whitstable
Wells Next The Sea
Deal (not as upmarket, but lovely walks to Kingsdown and up onto the cliffs)

Sorry, you said southern England. Whitby no good.

Rye?
Chichester?

Brancaster. Huge beach, dogs allowed in winter. Very dog friendly all-round, I'd say.
Good pubs and restaurants and very good seafood.

Hastings? I used to live near there, it's full of alcoholics and drug addicts, not sure I fancy walking past the place never mind a holiday there.

Dartmouth
Lyme Regis
Sidmouth
Rye
Yarmouth (isle of wight)

I would second Whistable too, very good walks, shops, cafés, restaurants etc.
And the Sportsman in Seasalter, just along the coast from Whitstable, is excellent.
It looks shabby but is a fantastic pub/restaurant with a Michelin star. Dogs are allowed too, apart from in the dining room. But the pub side is better to eat in anyway. You need to book it!

Rye
Beer
Sidmouth
Lyme Regis
Whitstable
Wells
Sheringham

Aldeburgh and Southwold have the sea with a certain bleak wildness, reassuringly backed up by a very genteel selection of great shops, a choice of quality restaurants, artisan bakeries and coffee shops and a bit of an arty / cultural vibe.

Not all the suggestions in this list match that, however lovely they are in and of themselves.

If you go to Norfolk you will like Holt and Burnham Market for shops and cafes.

OldTinHat · 01/11/2021 07:51

Isle of Wight. A bit like being abroad because of travelling by ferry. Very dog friendly.

Wells next to the sea in Norfolk

Norfolk Broads
