We're off to ludlow for a few days soon, with primary age dc. Planning on ludlow castle and maybe Ironbridge (though can't figure things out from their website). Any recommendations for other things to do??

Yes I can highly recommend a visit to my home town of Shrewsbury. Visit the market hall and have a walk along the river by the quarry. You can do a boat tour along the river, it's lovely!

Thanks, I'll look at that. Any other ideas anyone?

West Midlands Safari Park isn’t far

We had a week in Ludlow in the summer. Had never been before but found it really interesting.
Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre at Craven Arms
The Ironbridge museums are great, especially Blists Hill Victorian Town and Enginuity
Second Shrewsbury, it’s a fabulous place.

Stokesay castle is also just up the road in Craven Arms.

If you like the outdoors, Clee Hill is nice for a walk with some pretty impressive views across South Shropshire/Herefordshire/Worcestershire.

Again, Church Stretton isn't far and is on the way to Shrewsbury - lots of nice cafes, National Trust car park and walks up onto the Long Mynd.

Berrington Hall is a National Trust property about 10 mins south down the A49.

There's lots of lovely little villages on the fringes - Leintwardine is lovely and has two very nice pubs, one where you can go to the chippy and then sit and eat your chips with a pint from the pub next door.

Me too! I just moved here from Brum in August and have just started visiting the local areas. Last week we went to Ironbridge and Much Wenlock. I absolutely love the place, so pretty and so much to see and do.

National Trust - Brockhampton. Beautiful medieval farm in a hidden valley. About 20 miles away.

Bridgnorth - lovely old centre, steam railway, lots of lovely country pubs nearby

tumpymummy · 23/10/2021 07:54

I definitely recommend the Victorian village at Ironbridge if you have kids. Also for walks National Trust Long Mynd or for shorter walks Shropshire Discovery centre. There's also a victorian working farm at Acton Scott.

Many thanks for all the ideas. Will def try croft castle as it's near to us. And Blist Hill.

Just back from our first visit to the area after 3 nights in Ludlow. I'd recommend booking places to eat in advance as we really struggled (fussy gluten free 11 year old doesn't help). We did have a lovely lunch in the Rose and Crown in Ludlow. Sadly the castle was shut we didn't get to see it.

We were with my mum who has arthritis so not as much walking as we normally do. We found driving up the Long Mynd super easy and so much less busy than out native Devon. It was fabulous. We enjoyed Stokesay Castle very much. Better than a more traditional castle really as lots of rooms to look in. Shrewsbury was lovely and I would have liked to have seen more of it.

We had a successful visit to Ironbridge. It looked very complicated from the website but was fine once we got there. Blists Hill easily filled 3 hours, could have spend longer but poor mum was exhausted. I took the kids to the Iron museum (oldest DD genuinely interested) but it was a bit dry after Blists Hill. They loved Enguinuity next door and would have stayed all day if allowed.

My mum absolutely loved the area and it was so easy to get around as not crowded in the half term like Devon. We may well return next year to get our Ironbridge tickets money's worth.
