Am looking for a fab hol in Cornwall, self catering, with DH and our two sons who will be 2 ad a half and 6 mths. Has to have a pool but be near lovely beaches too. Would be great if they had some kind of kids club also! Any ideas?

Bosinver farm

SayNOtothecookieRookie · 07/01/2008 14:41

Ooh ooh I've just had the go ahead from Dh to look at booking Bosinver farm. Has anyone stayed there, it looks fab. Ooh I'm so excited, usually we leave our holidays until the last minute and end up staying in a barn.

The appartments at the Headland Hotel are fab. We went last year. Very pricey but it's got everything there including indoor and outdoor pool and Fistral Beach.

Kiera - do you know if there is a age limit on children as have an 8 year old and a two year old?

rainbowbadger · 09/01/2008 19:34

Sorry that should have included 'at trealfarm'!!

llareggub · 12/01/2008 19:53

We're off to Bosinver too. When are you going?

LynetteScavo · 12/01/2008 19:58

We've stayed at Glynn Barton, for the past 3 years, and it is fabulous. We've missed out this year, though as we were thinking of going to France, so didn't book the neccessary 12 months ahead. So now we'er in the same boat, deperately trying to find somewhere decent, which isn't already booked.

LynetteScavo · 12/01/2008 20:09

Bosinver Looks great, & afordable, but is totally booked

ChasingSquirrels · 12/01/2008 20:13

we have been to bosinver 4 times, and are going again this year.
glynn barton looks very similar, but was fully booked the first year we went, hence we went to bosinver - and love it so much we keep going back.
happy to advise on cottages.
they dont have a kids club.

LIZS · 12/01/2008 20:14

that's a shame . There's currently more availability for this summer than when I booked up last New Year for July 2007.

ChasingSquirrels · 12/01/2008 20:17

yes, their availabilty os off htis year, we normal book for mid-May about 2 months in advance. this time the cottage we wanted went in oct 07 and alot of May seems to be sold out, yet the summer has availabilty which it never has.
I guess there could well be groups of families who have been going for years and meeting up (they definitly have this - Pentree visitor book showed the same 3 weeks in July taken by the same family for at least the last 3 years) who have now all outgrown it at the same time.

kiera · 13/01/2008 13:41

rainbowbadger - as far as I know there is no age limit. last time we holidayed there was another family staying in the other barn conversion and they had 3 kids, the oldest must have been 8ish. they do horse/pony rides/lessons if he/she is interested!

PavlovtheCat · 13/01/2008 13:51

My family from USA came over with their two children 9 and 6 months old, stayed here, no kids club and not completely sure how toddler proof it is, but caters for families might be good...

Advice on Bosinver Cottages. Me, Hubby and 3 yr old. 1. What Cottage should we book? 2. Where is there to do at night 3. R the local pubs, restuarants any good? 4. R they walking/driving distance?

DANCESwithaMuffinTop · 13/01/2008 21:28

Bit of an old thread but this company is great helpful holidays for finding holiday cottages, they have a very good 'advanced search' tool for finding just what you want.

ChasingSquirrels · 13/01/2008 21:32
  1. Coliza, Buddelia, Hydrangea (but get Buddelia if you can because the parking at Hydrangea is crap).
Pentree is lovely, but I think it costs more and with only 3 of you you don't need the extra space. We have stayed in Polclay, Hydrangea and Pentree (twice) and are going back to Hydrangea this year (Pentree was booked). Polclay is nice upstairs and the main bedroom has french doors onto the play area, but downstairs is a bit cramped and dark. There are other nice ones - but these are at the top of the estate and near to the play area and soft play barn, which if you aren't going in school holidays will be fine.
  1. Nothing to do at night at Bosinver itself, we tend to eat out then put the kids to bed, watch tv, read, chat etc.
  1. A handful of good nearby pubs (driving distance approx 5/10 mins), plus others further afield.
  1. The Polgooth Inn is about a 20 minute walk down the Bosinver dirk track if you wanted to walk. You would need a torch. We didn't like it there so haven't been back.
ChasingSquirrels · 13/01/2008 21:33

that meant get Buddelia over Hydrangea if you choose those ones - they are identical cottages.

mumma2cjh · 13/01/2008 21:38

brilliant info...thanks. Buddelia looks great and was my preference. It is only available 13 Sept for 1 week but only £500!!! We were looking to go abroad but cant find anything for under £1,400 (for decent hotel etc..) plus all the hassle. Went to Devon last yr and had an amazing time. Do you think Sept is too late to go. Forgot to ask - nearby beaches??? and last question if you book now for Sept do you have to pay in full?

mumma2cjh · 13/01/2008 21:40

we love eating out at night etc... again are there enough "good" pubs locally to eat out say once or twice a week?

MrsCellophane · 13/01/2008 21:54

Maenporth Estate near Falmouth. To see all the properties, you'll have to google it, as the properties are all privately-owned so rented via different agents. Being privately-owned, they are all slightly different inside - but I think the standard is supposed to be generally high.

We book through Holiday Cornwall as they have an office there - useful if there are any problems, and there is the possibility to purchase gorgeous home-made dishes from a catering lady who leaves them in the freezer, ready for your arrival!

Estate is lovely (though not cheap) - beautiful setting above lovely beach (5 mins downhill). We love it!

No kids club, but small play area (adequate for 2.5 yo) and lovely indoor pool.

MrsCellophane · 13/01/2008 21:57

mummy2cjh - we used to go in September and have had really nice weather. We've been known to have pretty warm sunny days in oct too!

Last July we had awful weather - loads of rain. You just can't tell, but I don't think Sept is too late, really.

ChasingSquirrels · 13/01/2008 22:01

Sept not too late to go, we have always gone in May - but you can't know what the weather is like any time in the UK, so it could rain all week or it could be brilliant. Weatherwise we have had one brilliant week, 2 very very wet weeks and one good week.
Plenty of beaches around, again have to drive - drpends on how long, but a couple within 5/10 mins and lots within 30 mins.
You won't have to pay in full yet I don't think, just looked at my booking e-mail, you will have to pay a deposit then balance 4 weeks in advance based on mine. Website will tell you when you go through the booking though.
We eat out every night, probably at 3/4 pubs. We like The Dolphin (3 villages down on the Truro road - can't remember the village name), The Ship at Pentewan and can't remember any more atm.
Buddelia is just up from the soft play place and across the track from the playground and trampoline.

MrsCellophane · 13/01/2008 22:06

If you're talking Truro area, we like eating (lunch) at the Heron at Malpas. We sit outside and have wonderful views of the River Fal. .
