Trip to london

So, I’ve booked my sons first trip to london. I wondered if any of you were able to recommend any itineraries?
I’d like him to see Buckingham Palace & changing of the guard, Westminster Abbey, 10 Downing Street.
Possible ride on the London Eye? Hamleys? Tower of London?
We arrive at 9.30 and have a whole day and then we have until lunchtime the following day.
If you have any advice that would be great.
Thanks

Yeah, I’ll be happy to do the tube as it’ll be an experience to share.

Sorry to pester but I’d really like to do what you’ve suggested & just have a query… when catching the cable car it says it’s from North Greenwich to royal Victoria dock - I assume there are stops and we can get off earlier? Where would you recommend? Thanks

Yes that would be great!
Yeah a full day then a morning & then a matinee.
Thank you

Skip the London Eye and climb The Monument instead.
THE MONUMENT TO THE GREAT FIRE OF LONDON
It’s £5.40 for adults and £2.70 for children and you get to climb 311 steps to a fab view.

If you are happy to take the tube I would recommend Wonderlab at the Science Museum if you can get a ticket, it's a great interactive exhibition aimed at 8-14 year olds.

It just goes from one to the other - there are no other stops. I’d probably get the Tube to North Greenwich and then the DLR from the other end (that might be an interesting experience by itself)

Yes just from one side of the Thames to the other. No need to rebook, and never been any queues when I’ve been. We just got off and came straight back the other side. There is a museum run by Emirates I think that they will ask if you want a combined ticket for - maybe have a look at trip advisor to see what it’s like and also the Museum of London Docklands is newish and nearby on the other side of the river. On the North Greenwich site you’ve got the O2 right there, it’s basically a shopping mall with restaurants and shops but you could have lunch there?

When you come back on the boat you could get off at various stops, maybe Tower of London.

Also, have a look at getting free Sky Garden tickets

You can get a combined ticket for a Thames trip to the Emirates cable, I would get on at Westminster Pier. You will pass many sights and can upgrade to a hop on and off ticket. You dont stop anywhere on the actual cable car but can look around the 02 and maybe climb up it if you like heights. What day of the week are you going. Greenwich is interesting with a weekend market, The Cutty Sark, The Maritime Museum and The Royal Observatory. There are plenty of places to eat and you can get the boat back to Westminster, look around Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, walk back up Whitehall past Downing Strret and Trafalgar Square to the hotel. The next day you can go to Covent Garden, see what's on at the local museums, walk to Leicester Square to the Lego shop, have lunch then walk back to The Lyceum. What train station will you arrive at.

I’m saving your ideas so thanks so much. Def doing the cable car & Uber now and the walk back past landmarks.
We arrive at kings cross but think we’ll go to hotel to drop our bag off first.

Assuming you are going to your hotel first to drop luggage off I would come out of your hotel and turn right and head to Leicester Square.

In the square itself you will see the Scenes in the square statues (you'll have to look up to see a few)

You also have the M&M shop here with the lego shop opposite.

I would then head down to Trafalgar Square, see the fourth plinth and London's smallest police station. Walk through admiralty arch (look for the nose) and walk down the mall to Buckingham palace. You can time this for changing of the guards but you may need to get there early for a good view, tho I doubt it's as busy with less tourism these days. I would then walk back through St James Park to Parliament Square to see the statues, then just veer back slightly to see Westminster abbey. Depending on the day/time you can go in but there is a charge. I would then walk up to 10 Downing Street past the cenotaph and then turn back on yourself to go to Westminster Pier if you want to do the cable cars you can get a boat from here. Or just get a boat down the river to see the sights and go through the bridges etc. Personally the cable car is a little dull, but climbing the O2 is good fun (you would need to pre book and possibly check the lowest age limit) you. Bear in mind that the cable car is by the 02 and not over by the observatory/cutty sark/maritime museum etc however if going by boat they are by Greenwich pier. The cable car is North Greenwich pier. It's prob an hour on a boat between Westminster & Greenwich. You will go past the London eye and Tower of London etc

I would then spend the next morning exploring Covent Garden before your show. The London transport museum is in CG and quite hands on and fun from memory.

FleasInMyKnees · 20/10/2021 10:52

The area around Kings Cross is quite interesting now there is Granary Square with the fountains, cafes and shops and I think there is a river boat/canal museum. You will find it a long walk back from the p3 to Covent Garden, it's not something I would do.

FleasInMyKnees · 20/10/2021 10:52

The o2, not the p3.

Littlesticklebrick · 20/10/2021 21:29

@FleasInMyKnees I won’t walk back from the O2, I plan on the Uber boat or cable car
