Looking for inspiration for a UK half term break

We wanted to go away half term, just for a couple of nights, it would be me, dh and two ds, eldest is a teenager. Leaning towards a city break.

We were thinking of London, but we have been twice already several years ago and we are not sure it will be as exciting.

We are really stuck in a rut for ideas. We've done quite a few beautiful seaside breaks, we've done theme parks, can't afford anything like centre parcs.

Thought about York.

We usually love getting out and exploring but we are really lacking motivation.

It’s a good time to go to York as not as busy as summer and Xmas when it’s heaving. York Maze Hallowscream or a ghost walk may appeal to your dc.

Liverpool is always our favourite city break. So much to see and do, there's loads of threads on here with suggestions.

A bit random but how about Portsmouth. I think the naval dockyards are open, the Mary Rose, Spinnaker Tower etc, Gunwharf Keys has some things for teenagers and ai think there's Go Ape place close to Portsmouth.

Depends what your DC like doing. Another option might be somewhere with a sports fixture, stadium tour.

There are plenty of interesting things to do in York to fill a couple of days, but I think that Liverpool has a wider variety of possibilities, a river cruise or tour of a football stadium, a trip to the shore for the Gormley sculptures, for instance. Also Liverpool has a huge number & range of places to eat, for all purses.

The UK is absolutely amazing in that almost everywhere is stuffed with historical interest, curiosities or natural wonders.

If you are feeling brave, pick somewhere with a pin. (When I was a kid we went to Newport Pagnell, Milton Keynes and Kidderminster as supposedly unpromising places to visit. All great.) Or go to Newcastle. It's great.

Or pick something you like (eg steam trains) and google where is the best steam train/spa/chocolate shop/laser quest/museum and go.

Northumberland - big beautiful beaches and lots of castles.

City break in Edinburgh - castle, camera obscura, royal mile, shops restaurants etc.

Lake District - wrap up and bring good quality waterproofs lots of lovely places to visit, outdoor adventure activities and fells to walk up etc.

Cambridge? Edinburgh?

abbs1 · 17/10/2021 18:55

Lake district is beautiful. We went a few years ago this time of year and loved it!

York would be great. Ghost walk, chocolate story, Beningbrough Hall on the outskirts always has fabulous art on loan. Younger DC will like the free National Railway Museum.

Another vote for Liverpool, it really does have something for everyone and is an excellent base as The Lakes, North Wales and Blackpool are all within 90mins drive.
Any things on your bucket list?

The Hidden gem in Liverpool is the Watersport’s place does a Speed Boat ride through the docks as some docks have no speed limit its cold so wrap up, but fantastic, £50 for a family of 4.

They also do lots of other activities so well worth a look.
